European Student Conference :
Rights and Conditions of Exchange Students in Europe

  Arranged by Erasmus Student Network (ESN) in close co-operation with ESIB - the National Unions of Students in Europe and AEGEE-Europe, supported by the European Commission.

How is the integration process in Europe influencing Higher Education? How has the mobility programmes changed the life of European Students? What are the main obstacles to mobility today and how can they be removed?
What about :

  • Social
  • Academic Accreditation
  • Study Grants
  • Languages
  • Integration at the host University

The expected outcome of the conference :

  • Greater awareness of the Exchange Students' Rights and Obstacles to mobility.
  • A statement clearly expressing the view of the Student Organisations on which rights students should have, when they want to make a study visit abroad.
  • Increased co-operation between international student organisations.
  • A report containing the main conclusions of the conference.
  • Exchange of ideas and information on how to improve the conditions for exchange students across Europe.

The conference is held in connection with the annual general meeting (AGM) of ESN, which will also be open to the participants of the Conference. There will be some joint workshops, colloquia and seminars for participants of the conference as well as the AGM, in order to use the experience of the local ESN-sections and hence get a broader perspective on the problems facing Exchange Students in their daily life.

Contents of the different sessions:
Plenary Sessions
The Plenary session will be divided in to three topics:

  • Obstacles to mobility
  • Europe and Higher Education
  • Exchange Students Rights in the Future

Speakers have been invited from among others the: European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe, Confederation of European Union Rectors' Conferences, EAIE, Deutsche Studentenwerke, The Danish Ministry of Education, European Youth Forum, ESIB, AEGEE and ESN.

Colloquia
Three colloquia will be held together with the AGM. The topics are:

  • The second phase of the SOCRATES programme.
  • Defending the rights of Exchange students.
  • The University of Aarhus - an example for the future!

Workshops/Seminar

  • Defending the exchange student rights? : Follow-up on the colloquium
  • Socrates : How can we improve the programme? Is there a future for Socrates? Follow-up on the colloquium
  • Socio-economic conditions of exchange students in Europe.
  • Youth in Europe : What does it mean to be European? A philosophical discussion.
  • Harmonisation of Higher Education in Europe! : ASK ESIB! What is it? Do we want it?
  • Information on the different student organisations : Shout presentation of the present student organisations.

Information Market
An open information fair where the different participants in the conference as well as the AGM can present their association to one another and students in Aarhus.
You will be asked to bring information about the your association.

17.00 Meeting between the International Student Organisations represented.
19.00 Dinner.

Thursday the 11th of March.
10.00 Plenary session on Education in Europe.
12.00 Lunch
13.30 Plenary session on Exchange Student Rights in the future.
18.00 Reception and Official Opening of the AGM.

Friday the 12th of March
10.00 Preparation of Information market and workshops.
12.00 Lunch
13.00 Colloquia
15.30 Information Market
19.00 Dinner

Saturday the 13th of March

10.00 Presentation of Workshop Reports.

13.00 Meetings on the joint statement on student rights and the final report.

Monday the 15th of March
Departure of the Participants.


Practical information which should be mentioned is.

Participation Fee will be 400 DKr (~53 ECU) including accommodation at a Plaza Hotel Aarhus, all meals and refreshments.
There is a possibility to apply for Travel Reimbursement, which will be granted for a number of the participants (only available for people from countries participating in SOCRATES).
