CU-SeeMe

What do I need?

CU-SeeMe is a video conferencing application running over the Internet that was created by Cornell's Information Technology group. Using it you can conference with one or more people. CU-SeeMe runs in 4 bit greyscale using QuickTime, at either 160 by 120 or 320 by 240 resolution, but the current version does not support sound. You can receive video on any QuickTime-capable Macintosh (68020 machine with 4 bit greyscale monitor). To send video you can use a small CCD camera, or a video digitizer such as is provided in the AV Macintoshes, or the Video Spigot board. CU-SeeMe is available via:

Setting up CU-SeeMe

Although CU-SeeMe only supports one-to-one connections between IP addresses, you can use a UNIX machine as a reflector to set up a conference between as many as six sites. The reflector software was written for SunOS, but probably can be ported to other versions of UNIX.

To setup CU-SeeMe, select Preferences... from the Edit menu. This will bring up the following dialog box:

To connect to a site, select Connect... from the Connection menu. This will bring up the following dialog box. CU-SeeMe does not currently support DNS, so you will need to input the IP address of the site or reflector that you want to reach.

If you get tired of inputting IP addresses, you can select Edit Nickname and New... from the Edit menu, in order to add a new nickname, or to input or edit nicknames for the various sites.

Selecting New... will bring up the following dialog box:

Once youve entered in the nicknames, you can then select Connect To from the Connections menu, and then choose one of the nicknames:

After you attempt to connect CU-SeeMe will inform you if the site is not online. However, when connecting to a reflector, you will not see anything until one of the sites feeding the reflector comes online. If your site is online however, you will see the following window (320 by 240 size):
