VI RELEASE LIMITATIONS - GENERAL - This release of Open File Manager supports only Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 server and workstation platforms. This applies to the control program and the system component. - The Open File Manager Control Program (OFMWin32) is a 32-bit application. It does not run on Windows 3.x platforms. - If you are using a workstation-based backup product or you are backing up a remote system, you must login with a specific user name that is reserved for backups. Refer to Section Remote System Backup Login in the Manual or Online Help. - The use of two or more backup programs at the same time is not recommended. - It is strongly recommended that you not load Open File Manager while a backup is in progress. However, it is not necessary to unload the backup agents when loading Open File Manager. - If you are using Open File Manager on a system that also has an application specific backup agent, you must instruct Open File Manager to ignore all files that are managed by that backup agent. - Open File Manager version 5.x and 3.x should not be run on a system at the same time. Further, Open File Manager version 5.x should not be run on a system with Cheyenne Software's Backup Agent for Open Files. When attempting to install the system component of Open File Manager version 5.x, the existence of earlier versions of Open File Manager is detected. You will be requested to uninstall the earlier version of the product. VII BACKUP APPLICATION SPECIFIC TECHNICAL NOTES 1. Backup Application Log and Database Files - Normally, Open File Manager will ignore processing on any log or database files managed directly by the backup application. However, since the backup application usually performs a lot of file I/O recording its activities and maintaining the backup databases, you can greatly reduce the amount of preview data OFM creates and improve performance, if you create an Ignore Set (from OFMWIN32, go to the File Properties screen) for the backup application directory and all of its associated sub-directories. From the File Properties screen, Selecting Add will bring up a standard Windows Browse dialog box. From this dialog box, select the backup application directory and also select "Include all sub-directories". This will configure OFM to ignore the backup application directories and subdirectories where log or database files are stored. 2. Two Backup Applications or Application Specific Agents - Running two different backup programs at the same time is not recommended . Running an agent to allow backups of a live database (like backing up Microsoft Exchange) results in a complicated and unreliable interaction among Open File Manager, the backup program and the specialized backup agent. This is also not recommended. If you are using Open File Manager on a system that also has an application specific backup agent, you must instruct Open File Manager to ignore all files that are managed by that backup agent. 3. Remote Server Backups - Remote systems are backed up either by logging in (just like a normal user) or by using a remote backup agent (a special component loaded on the remote system). Many backup products can use either or both methods. Open File Manager supports remote system backup for all products which use the login method. Refer to the section dealing with Remote System Backup in the online documentation for instructions on how to configure Open File Manager to recognize these login names. Under Windows NT, Open File Manager supports remote system backup programs that are 'NT aware'. This means that both the system on which the backup program is running, and the target system being backed up are Windows NT systems, and that the backup program uses a special operating system feature ('open for backup intent') that is available only to holders of the user right policy 'Backup Files and Directories'. This right is normally granted to administrators and backup operators. Use of this feature eliminates the need to configure a login name for remote system backup.
