Anti-virus products are tested on, amongst other things, their ability to detect viruses which are actually 'In-The-Wild' and causing infections. We currently use as our research base the work done by Joe Wells and the 'In-the-Wild' contributors who are located all over the world. These are virus researchers and anti-virus product sellers to whom virus infections are reported û usually by the victims of those infections. These reports are then passed on to Joe Wells who co-ordinates them and publishes an 'In-the-Wild' list each month.

Checkmark uses this independent research as the basis for its tests because at present it is the best and most accurate source of information in this area. It is also widely accepted by the anti-virus industry as reliable independent data.
