═══ 1. What Is Archie? ═══ Welcome to Archie! On the Internet you can transfer files between workstations with the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). To transfer a file, you need to know the host workstation name where the file resides, as well as the file name and directory name. The Archie program is a search and retrieval tool that helps you find files and directories that you need. Once you locate a file, you can download the file to your workstation. The Archie program queries the Archie databases, which contain file and directory names. The Archie databases are automatically built on the Archie servers. There are many Archie servers and millions of file and directory names stored in the Archie databases. You use the Archie program to search for file and directory names listed on the Archie servers. Which Archie Server Do I Use? Archie queries the Archie servers, which contain the file and directory names. Because there are so many Archie servers, it is tempting to use one in another part of the world. However, to conserve network resources, always try to use the Archie server that is nearest to you. This online help will assist you in starting, using, and exiting Archie. It also contains information about the various functions of Archie. ═══ 1.1. To locate other Archie servers, you can Telnet to a known Archie server and obtain a list of additional Archie servers.
