I have a question, before I book my room during the heat of
the Cambodian summer... as I've never been to SE Asia, I'm
hoping somebody will advise!
Just how tolerable is the heat at night... is air-con
really necessary (and a good investment), or is a fan
generally sufficient to keep the room cool enough for a
good night's sleep?
Thanks!
Ali

is sufficient.
A fan is sufficient, sort of...... But yeah, SEAsian heat
is muggy, wet, sticky, takes some getting used to, gives
you a pounding heart, headache.....Lovely!
If you can afford it go the aircon
I didn't find the heat that bad on most nights. The air
con is usually pretty freezing cold. If you're only going
for a short time you might want to go for it anyway since
you wont have as long a time to get used to the heat.
The hot season will soon pass...a fan will be sufficient.
a fan is plenty good enough. in fact you might get a cold if
you use aircon.
agree with mat
I disagree - remember a fan doesn't keep the mosquitos away
I think it's got to be the fan/mosquito net combo
It depends on the design of the building,
folks. Traditional wood Cambodian houses
were designed to encourage air circulation
and keep you cool. A fan works well in
them. But the ugly, modern, concrete
monstrosities have no circulation or
cooling features, thus giving rise to the
need for a/c. Really, it varies for everyone--
I've done both.
Fan OK, aircon is cooler (obviously) but some of them make
such a racket they cause more disturbance than the heat.

Don't listen to those who tell you go for the fan, it is
obviously all those people who just love to call themselves
travellers and frown on "luxuries" (or cannot afford them).
Some people above pointed out at various things other than
the opressing heat that you should consider: mosquitoes
(yes, they can be worse than the heat and may keep you up
the entire night), humidity (you literally swim in your own
sweat) and also the wind and the noise from the fan
(although some old fashioned air conditioners may be
equally or even more noisy). Sure you will survive with a
fan but remember Cambodia is one of the hottest and most
humid places in the region and there is nothing like a good
night sleep in a cool room after a sweaty day.
my god you're all sad bastards.
I can't believe it - 14 posts already on whether Mr. Ali
should use a fan or take air-con. There has to be more to
life than this. Hasn't there?
I'll settle this debate in one go. Get a room with both!
Oh my goodness, I leave the LP for 3 days and return to 16
posts! You guys are the greatest :)
I have officially requested 3 days of aircon in Phnom Penh,
and will use this experience to determine what I pick from
there on.
Many thanks to all of you, and happy trails!
