My sister and I are planning on a trip to Vietnam - probably
next year - for about 2 weeks.
When is the best time to go?
Which are the best places to go?
Thanks in advance

....what you like. I prefer the winter season so I get the
variety of weather from North to South but thats me. after
travelling in all sorts of weather i dont think it really
matters unless you hate "hot", then don't go in June. With
only 2 weeks i would be inclined to stick to the North, but
it is possible to fly around and do the standard N-S trail.

  2. Avoid summer Added by: cathy

My mother says the best time to go is December, because it's
cool. If you want to avoid crowds, you might avoid the Tet
period, Vietnamese New Year around end of January/beginning
of February; that's when the Vietnamese who are overseas
like to go back. The summer is really "continental" hot in
the North, and "tropical" hot in the South, unpleasantly in
both places. As for sights: the South is more westernized,
the North more historical. A neat itinerary might be to
visit the three capitols and compare the different flavors:
Hanoi (North), Hue (Central), and Ho Chi Minh City (South).

  3. south Vietnam Added by: Tina

We went to south Vietnam at the end of November and for the first week it was still the monsoon. The rain was a real problem - miserable, and it screws up all the transport systems. I would say that December would be a brilliant time to go (rainy season well and truly over) or perhaps February (avoid Tet in January). Don't miss the Mekong Delta. We went on a 3 day trip with Sinh Cafe and it was the highlight of the holiday. We didn't go to Hue, but I wish I had - everyone who went liked it.

I was in Hanoi February this year. Weather was perfect,
like Autumn in Europe, 22 degrees.

  5. Hoi An Added by: Paddy

Do not miss Hoi An, the most chilled out colourfull town in
Vietnam and clothes at cheaper prices than BKK. there is a
Chinese Japanese and European feel at it was once the major
    port for Vietnam.

I'm going on Sunday and apparently you can't take
traveller's cheques, does anyone know otherwise?

  7. Useful bits & pieces about VN: Added by: Dani
[Timestamp: Tue 11 May, 21:00 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Weather:
North (Ha Noi, etc): Four seasons about as most westerners sees it.
South (Saigon, etc): two seasons; rainy May-Nov peak in Aug, dry Dec-April peak in Jan-Feb.
Central (Hue, etc): About as south.
It's always good weather somewhere. Excellent info in the LP Guide.

    Jack:
Dunno where you've heard that TC:s won't work in VN. Works fine, just don't expect regular shops
to accept them. You have to deal with banks, mostly, and have to plan your expenses a bit.

  10. HO CHI MINH CITY Added by: Chila
[Timestamp: Thu 20 May, 2:35 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Avoid Ho Chi Minh City. If you want to get your luggage,
purse, camera, or personal phone book snatched by motorists,
by all means, go there. If you want to truly see how the
people live, and see friendly people who don't want to
cheat you or pickpocket you, go to a somewhat smaller city.
It's a hell of a lot more fun than the city too.
