Is it possible to fly from Chiang Mai to Hat Yai or any
other town near the malaysian border? How much will it cost?
Does anyone have info. about a good gusthouse in CM and a
serious trekking operator? Thanks

Try Som Wang Guest House located in Soi 3. The owner named Otto can be your guide and he speaks English. His price to bring you around Chiangmai is also reasonable. I have recommended some friends there and all of them are satisfied with Som Wang's service.
If you have more time, I would suggest that you take a train from Chiangmai to Hatyai. You could stop in Ayuthya and Bangkok on your way to Hatyai.

i think you will have to change in BKK. anyway try,
    www.thaiair.com
they have "updated" the site and it takes a week for the
front page to load. after that it's fast. look in the gold
bit at the top for a firect link to "schedules".

paradise hotel has great rooms ( single >> means two beds ) for a 100 baht .
It's a bit out of the city . but good value for your money .
I totally agree : if you have the chance do at least part overland ( perhaps from chang mai to bangkok !)
    good luck '
