You can get a 30 day tourist visa on arrival in Thailand.
You need to get a visa for Laos BEFORE entering that
country. (You can get it in Bangkok easy enough.) Don't know
about entry to VN from Laos.

Either in BKK (I think it's easiest to use travel agencies to get it than to deal w the VN embassy
yourself) or in Vientianne (VN embassy). Estimate a week to get them. But BE VERY CAREFUL
THAT YOU SPECIFY YOUR ENTRY/EXIT POINTS TO/FROM VIETNAM, AND MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE
THEY HAVE THEM WRITTEN (OR STAMPED) IN YOUR VISA. CHECK THIS WHEN YOU PICK THEM UP
AT THE EMBASSIES (or travel agency in BKK).
    Good advise:
Apply for the Vietnamese visa in Laos. Firstly because you will deal directly with the embassy and
the screw-up factor (regarding entry/exit points) will be minimized.
Second: The Vnese visa will allow you to travel in VN for one month (rarely anything else), the
entry/exit dates will be written into the visa. Suppose you will enjoy Laos so much, you decide to
stay there for a couple of weeks more, and thus will postpone your entry to VN. Then, you'll "lose"
a couple of weeks of your visa.
Aaaagh. I can't bloody explain, it's too early in the morning. Hope you understand what I mean
anyhow. If I've been too blurry, get back and repeat your query.

I, too, will be making it on foot (or bus, or train) from
BKK through Laos (or Cambodia) to Vietnam. Pardon my
ignorance, but can I get all the visas I need in BKK or
should/can I arrange them before I leave? Are the entry &
departure dates changeable? J&J, perhaps we're embarking on
a similar journey. Thank you all for your advise, this has
    been a great resource.
