I┤m planing to take the diving certificate in Thailand next
week. Can anyone recommend a good school and a nice place
to stay? The cheaper the better! I also wonder for how many
days the course goes on. If you know something about diving
or if you happen to be anywhere around Koh Tao please write!
Thank you/ Catrin

    Catrin:
My wife and I were on Koh Tao last fall; we arrived just
before the storm did. I dived with Big Blue (I got
certified the year before, so I didn't do their diving
course). I was impressed with the whole crew and their
operation. They had good equipment, stressed safety -- all
the right stuff. My lead diver was a young Brit who, again,
did the right things the right way. I think the dive course
is five days, but you'll want to check with them. They have
modest yet comfortable huts for about US$4-5 per night and
their location is great. There are also some great (and
    inexpensive)restaurants in the immediate neighborhood.

    Good luck.

    Hi Cat,
I spend 5 weeks on Koh Tao in 1997 (nov + dec)starting with
the basic Paddy diving course and finishing with the course
rescue diver. I am absolutely wild enthusiastic about the
approach of 'Caraboa Diving School', which you can find on
the (smaller) southern beach of the Island. Nice people,
cheap rates for accomodation, and a lot of emphasis on
personal security during the dives. Not the pure commercial
approach as was the case on the main beach (located on the
western part of the Island and named -I believe- Surathani
    beach.
A nice restaurant at walking distance, overlooking a small
but beautifull beach is named New Heaven (excellent G&T).
    Have lots of fun, Johan.
