  1. Japanese Encephalitis (JE) Added by: sukhipanna (sukhipanna@hotmail.com)

    Hi,
I am writing from Malaysia here. There are people here who
contracted JE and died of it. But this only happens in
certain farms in Malaysia where swines are reared. The
situation is under control. I don't think you need to worry
much about JE when you are in Malaysia.

You might want to look into the latest reports on the new
strain of encephalitis that plagued Malaysia this winter.
They originally thought it was JE, but it is a new strain.
Again, the risk is probably very low outside of pig
farming areas, but it would be worth at least checking the
    status of the situation.

I am also living in Malaysia and it would seem that most of
the victims of JE have been either workers at pig farms or
have lived in close proximity. Assuming you won't be
visiting any pig farms you should probably be okay.
My husband, myself and our two children have not taken any
precautions other than trying to keep mosquitoes at bay
    around the house.
Egypt Air - can't help you there. Sorry

  4. not in malaysia but.. Added by: lea

...I just talked with a travel nurse and got vaccinations
last week. In America, the vaccination for this is
expensive and drawn out, and only has about a 50% success
rate. Since the risk is so remote and the vaccination such
a bear physically and financially, I decided against it.

  5. JE etc Added by: Liz

I live in Malaysia - there is no problem unless you are
going to pig farm areas. The viral outbreak started as
Japanese encephalitis but in actual fact a different virus
was identified, first at Hendra, then as Nipah. This is a
completely different virus from JE, and although pigs are
hosts, other mammals also carriers. As a tourist there is
very little chance of your coming into contact with these
viruses. The viruses have been here for years, and only now
    is there an outbreak.
