I would like to go overland from KL to Bangkok. Is it
possile by bus or train? What's the cost and is there a
pass allowing me to stop in places form time to time?
Thanks.

You can go by either train or bus quite easily. A possible
itinerary would be KL to Penang (Butterworth). Spend some
time in Penang; then into Thailand. Stop at Surat Thani
and visit Koh Samui; perhaps over to Krabi. Then on up the
Malaysian Peninsula, perhaps stopping at Hua Hin. Can't
give you an exact cost, but it is very reasonable.
    Cheers

less than $40 US by train including sleeper surcharges. The
trains are great and you can stop where you like (although to
get there for under $40 bucks you would probably have to
restrict your stops to Butterworth and Surat Thani) The
Malasian Railways timetable is published on the site:
    http://minyos.its.rmit.edu.au/~tbmic/travel/places/malaysia/
    myrail.html#kul-had
The Thailand Railways timetable is published on the web as
well but I don't have the URL. I got there by doing a search
    for thailand railways timetable

    for Thailand trains.

If you are going with friends, it would be fun to go by
    train.
I tried this 2 years back. Take a bus from KL to
Butterworth at about 10.00pm. Reach Butterworth terminal at
about 4-5 am. Hang around at the terminal and wait till
dawn. Then take a ferry to cross to Penang Island. I
enjoyed the ride across the Straits of Malacca very much.
Have some delicious local food for breakfast. Penang is
    famous for FOOD.
By noon, you should cross to Butterworth again and go to
the railway station that is located across the ferry
terminal. Buy your ticket for the train ride to Bangkok,
Hualamphong Station. Get a seat that come with a sleeping
    berth.
You could stop anywhere along the route.....just plan ahead
and get your train tickets accordingly. Check out Hadyai,
    if you love shopping.
The transportation fee is definitely less than USD100.

I'd take a train to Butterworth, ferry across to Penang,
spend a few days in Penang - stay at the Cathay (but check
it out in LP first), back to BWTH then catch the
International Express to Thailand. You can get off at Hat
Yai if you want but it is reall just Bangkok without the
interesting bits. Surat Thani for Koh Samui and on to BKK.
    Enjoy
    Cheers

  6. $54AUS. Added by: sandgroper (matmac99@hotmail.com)

Was what it cost me 6 weeks ago with a stop at Butterworth
and a night in Georgetown. To be perfectly honest I can't
for the life of me see why any body would want to stay in
Penang, it really hasn't a lot going for it. The beaches are
crap and the high rise hotels very, very ordinary.
Georgetown may be worth a few hours but that's all.
The $54AUS was the cost of a bottom berth sleeper and worth
    every cent.
    Best wishes and safe travelling.
