Laos to Vietnam

I'm planning to travel from Laos to Vietnam by surface.
Does anybody know if there are crossing points from either
Vieng Xai, Sop Hao, Nong Haet or Sop Hun to Vietnam? Are
there any buses from Phonsavan to the frontier? And is
travel by bus safe and recommended in Eastern Laos? Any
advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I also wanted to go via Nong Het but the Vietnamese Embassy
issued only LaoBao or CauTreo stamps (three months ago).
These stamps are essential if you want to enter Vietnam,
otherwise they won't let you in. If you are tough and
have plenty of time you can try it, good luck! But expect to
    be sent back.
I've been to Phonsavan and asked around whether it's
possible to cross at NongHet. Nobody knew about it.
The roads are not really roads and the buses are not really
buses there. Bring plenty of time!
One possibility is to take the truck from Phonsavan to
Vientiane and then go to Laksao for Cau Treo. This is still
adventurous and can be done in two days.
