We are going to Thailand this June/July for our Honeymoon
we have planned to stay in Phuket for 7 nights and we are
still not sure if we should go to Chiang Mai or Koh Samui
for 5 nights. Could anyone please tell us which is a better
place for honeymooners.
We are just looking for nice scenery in a quite romantic
place. Any advice on where to stay and what to see and do
in either Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. Thanks

I have been to Thailand twice, once with my wife and the
last time backpacking on my own. My personal opinion would
be to go to Koh Samui and Chiang Mai if possible. Chiang
Mai has some wonderful scenery, lots of temples and plenty
of activities - the Night Bazaar is something else! I
stayed in a place called the "Top North Guesthouse" which
was inexpensive and in a central location. However, my
favourite location is Koh Samui,it's such a beautiful
island and Im sure, as honeymooners, you'll have a
fantastic time there. There are a number of international
hotels there but my personal preference are beach
bungalows. Last year I stayed in a place called "Island
View" which is in Chong Mon Bay, a lovely location and
still near to Chaweng where all the nightlife is. If you
need any further information, prices and contacts etc -
    please Email me.
    Regards
    John.

I think it depends on what you like. Actually I would look
at pictures in travel books see what appeals to you. I love
all of Thailand myself. Keep in mind you're already by the
ocean in Phuket. However, I would say Koh Samui is more
romantic than Chiang Mai...but seeing the hill people and
the Golden Triangle area is very interesting.

Seriously, Phuket is a seriously over-commercialized place.
It would be right down there with with las Vegas for a
honeymoon for me. There are some nice resorts and parts of
the island interior are nice, but ecch! Samui has been
developed somewhat more intelligently and there are places
like Laem Set Inn (in the LP Guide) and that would have
more romance than anything in Phuket.

Chiang Mai has some romantic places to stay (e.g., the old
timey wooden hotels near the river and the lodge outside of
town), however, I can't picture it as a honeymoon spot. The
town is overgrown, the mountains are pretty unexceptional
and an exercise in cultural degradation like the hilltribe
    treks is a real turnoff.
    x
Luang Prabang in Laos strikes me as a more romantic place--
an intimate scale, lots of little things to explore (wats,
old palace, Pak Ou). Hua Hin has this quality as well, plus
you're not far from nice national parks in Phetburi and
Kanchanburi. The Softiel (if you can afford it) has class
that's missing in most Thai resorts (the nearby Royal
garden has some of this, too). The train ride back to BKK
in late afternoon also has romance--the light and the
    foliage are lovely.

  4. Samui Added by: samui

Can't you cancel Phuket and go to Samui instead?
it is much more romantic, much more of the feel of being on
an isolated island than Phuket which is barely an island at
    all really.
Then you could go somwhere North, perhaps somwhere other
than Chiang Mai which is very touristy and busy and so not
    really romantic.
I have no idea of yuor budget, but if you added another post
telling us all, It would help greatly for advice.
