I'm thinking about a short trip to Vietnam. I have 2
possible times of the year to do this - in Oct or in Feb.
a) when would be the better time?
b) where are the best places to go? I'm looking at about
10 days to 2 weeks...
Cheers!

February is better and my suggestion would be to either
pick north or south (both are good) and use Hanoi or
Saigon, respectively, for basing. Hanoi offers cheap Sapa
or Ha Long Bay trips and Saigon has the Mekong Delta. Both
places also have good daytrips and local attractions (Cu
Chi tunnels, Tam Coc river, etc.) Nha Trang might be do-
able from Saigon. It's important with your timeframe to
curb road travel, as roads are still pretty bad and
intercity travel can eat too far into the rest of your time
if you try to cover too much ground. Flying might be an
option; if you can get the full 14 days you might split 7
north/7 south that way, but otherwise I'd say it's better
to do half the country well than hurry through trying to
get from pole to pole.
Tet (the lunar new year) will occur Feb 5-6 (may err). Overseas Vnese will visit families back
home = stiff competiton about available air seats. The locals incentive to release you from an extra
dollar is on the peak, and the celebrations are done mostly in Vnese homes which means it's nothing
like i.e. the carnival in Rio.
Don't arrange your vacation on advise at this site only. Go to your local library or bookshop and
learn more about VN. Then, get back here with more specific queries, and you'll get better replies.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice! I've bought LP Vietnam which I'm
reading - but I was trying to get a feel on what other
travellers think.
