I'm planning a rather short trip to Thailand this summer and
I was wondering whether anyone could give me some tips about
places I should see. Is there a nice beach resort not too
far away from Bangkok? And how do I have to expect the
weather to be like? Thanks a lot for your answers.

I thought the fares for express buses from S'pore to KL is
around SGD$25-30
You're idea of summer will probably be the rainy season in
Thailand. No, it doesn't rain all the time, but it can cloud
up quickly when you least expect it. On the other hand, it
does cool things down a lot.
Not far SE of Bangkok is Pattaya, a highly developed tourist
beach resort. It's all right, unless you're looking for some
place out of the way. Hua Hin on the west coast is a better
choice if you want to get away from other tourists. Be sure
to visit the old capital at Ayutthaya, not far north of
Bangkok. It was a city bigger than London, according to
European travellers in the 17th century. But the Burmese
sacked and burnt it in 1767. Lots of great ruins to explore.
You also might want to take a short trip to Kanchanaburi,
west of Bangkok. It's where the notorious Bridge over the
River Kwai (actually River Kwae) was and is the site of a
huge cemetery full of Allied POWs who died in Japanese
hands. On a happier note, there are beautiful caves in the
area and scads of gem mines (blue sapphires mostly). That
should keep you busy for a short visit. (You might enjoy the
"Ancient City," a private park featuring replicas of famous
buildings across Thailand. Many Thai historical films are
shot there.) Enjoy yourself.
it is cheaper to cross from singapore into Johor
Bharu in Malaysia by either bus or on foot, and then
catching a bus up to Penang. Buses from S'pore to Malaysia
cost about 50% more than from Malaysia.
The cheapest way to penang is by taking a plane from johor,
the cost is around sin$73 & the airline is malaysia AL.
If u are from sing. u can get your ticket though mas office
at singapore shopping centre beside park mall. They will
also provide tranfer services from sing to johore airport
at a additional cost of sin$12............enjoy!
