Probably have read all the bad. I am a female intending to
travel alone from Singapore overland up to Northern
Thailand to do some hilltribe trekking. Heard some crazy
stories about soldiers harrassing people in the night, and
groups going missing. Is it risky?

Love, who have you been listening too? Don't know about
Malaysia since Mahathir has decided he's Allah's new
messenger, but I always found the Malays friendly and
pleasant. I hardly think they've changed. (Just don't talk
about politics with them.) No problem with harrassment in
Thailand either, other than an occasional drunk who suddenly
wants to be your good buddy and share his booze with you. If
you're the trekking sort, you'll probably make travelling
friends quickly enough anyway. Doubt if you'll be alone for
long.
The stories you may have been reading are about Thai
villagers who were murdered recently by opium smugglers from
Burma. Seems that two Thais who may have been dealing a bit
in drugs disappeared one day. The next day their village
near the border sent out a search party. The search party
found the Burmese bandits, who proceeded to torture and
finally beat to death the entire group. No westerners
involved in any of it. And that is nowhere near where you'd
be likely to go. But it's not a good time to go trekking
into Burma, to say the least.
There was a posting here a few weeks ago of someone getting
harrassed by rebels at night while doing a trek in the
neighbourhood of Mae Hong Son. I would stick to treck
departing from Chiang to avoid this risk, however small it
is.
I have info on this on my site

there myself and no worries matey.
So have fun and take care and don't forget your ouzy (
