we want to buy/rent motorbikes in Thailand when we first
arrive, and then travel around thailand on them. I have 2
and a half months there and my boyfriend has 1 month. Is
this advisable, if so can anyone suggest which is the
cheaper way to do this, and have we enough time. Do we need
licenses for the bikes, is petrol expensive. Is there a
cheaper way of travelling. What are the roads like there,
will we be able to cover most of the sites this way. Are
the maps good? we are not going up north, mainly along the
coast.
is the weather going to be really rainy in June, July and
August?

I did it on a bicycle, and watch out.. anything on two
wheels is just a moving target for busses and trucks.
Maps are shit, try to get TPCs (Tactical Pilotage Charts)
at Home. I promise , you will get lost anyway.
But its fun and cheap to travel on your own and you have
more contact with the locals. Try to stay on secondary
roads, they are mostly o.k. and the traffic is less.

here is anextract I found..... :-)
We locals enjoy June, July and August, since the weather is
usually fine and our favourite haunts remain uncrowded. The
usual pattern is brief but heavy showers, with plenty of
sunshine between downpours. Everything is a little less
expensive at this time of year, as well. Temperatures range
between 70║F and 90║F (20║C to 33║C).
During September and early October we locals start to
remember our umbrellas. This makes an ideal time to visit
abroad. One consolation for those who remain is that the
the beaches, outdoor restaurants and streets are relatively
uncluttered by visitors. And even at this time, we still
get long intervals of sunshine between the heavy showers.
