Have a slight problem. The question is whether to break a
large traveler's cheque into Baht and then buy other cash or
to get the money on the card and pay it later.
So: Does anyone know of any banks that will break a large
USD traveler's cheque into smaller ones without going into
baht and paying the service charge twice?
Or, does anyone know the best bank or money exchange in
Bangkok (or Chiang Mai) to get an advance on a traveler's
check or draw on a VISA/MC debit card?

why not do it at the office of the TT company. Amex and
Thomas Cook both have offices in Bangkok, and probably any
other large issueing company. Cash the cheques in and get
smaller ones re-issued. You might have to pay a commission
on the re-issued cheques. but i warn you, if the thais can
screw you on this they will after all it's money and hence
serious.
Remember that any time you cash in cheques, exchange money
etc. you pay charges for the service. It can add up after a
while.
The Thais won't screw you any more than any bank will.
Anyway, at least they'll smile when they do so. (Thai
bankers are all ethnic Chinese, by the way, same as in the
rest of SE Asia. And speaking of British or American owned
banks in Asia, the buggers right now don't even want to deal
with you unless you've piles of money. About the minimum
you have to keep in your account now is 10,000 baht. Less
than that and they will charge you money to keep it there!))
