Hong Kong is a relatively expensive city in Southern China.
But thanks to the Asia financial crisis, most of the
accommodation/food/clothing costs are 30-50% off from the
peak of 1997. You need to plan ahead for backpacking HK.

For budget and comfortable stay around US$10 per bed, I
highly recommend the HK Youth Hostels; Jockey Club Mt. Davis
is the best because of its close location to downtown and
its free shuttle bus from downtown.

For cheap food, McDonald's will cost you around US$2.5 for a
burger, French fries and drink.
Or you can use the following search engine to search
restaurants with expenses per head under HK$50(US$6.5):

There are actually many local restaurants and noodle shops
food and drink combo lunch and dinner under US$4.

The above budget travel site has generally good info for
backpacking HK but some info are outdated.
