Mae Hong Son, Pai, Mae Sariang, Doi Suthep, Tha Ton,
Lampang, Nan, Sukhothai, Mae Sot,Phitsanulok...can you
recommend any of these? Can I do some sort of logical
circuit in 2 weeks from Bangkok in mid June? I am single,
female, age 50,and enjoy scenery & great food! Thanks in
advance for your advice.

    Mae Sariang: nothing much there, which may give it appeal.
    x
    Doi Suthep: Nice afternoon or morning jaunt from Chiang
    Mai---revered temple, nice little hike
    x
    Lampang: growing provincial capital, really several towns
    strung together--older areas are nice, newer areas just
    ugly; good riverside restaurants (just use the LP guide),
    still has horse drawn carriages in town (only place in
    Thailand), good examples of Burmese influenced architecture
    (wats and near the rail station)
    x
    Nan: wonderful place. the town center has some unique
    temples, remnants of the old wooden shopping centre, and a
    better than average museum; nice national park nearby (see
    the falls), nearby towns include non-schlocky Thai Lue and
    other minority villages with weaving, unique temples, etc.
    These folks don't dress up or engage in schlocky tourist
    rituals--you can walk around and have a real experience
    instead of a contrived one; nan is a good place to buy
    silver and high quality (not cheap) locally made crafts;
    good music at the wooden hotel in town in the evening
    x
    Sukhothai: the town itself is unremarkable; the old town
    (nearby) is more interesting and impressive than Ayuthya;
    take a daytrip to Si Sachanalai which has additional
    historic buildings in a beautiful wooded setting--can ride
    elephants around the park; good restaurant and over priced
    antiques just outside the park
    x
    Phitsanulok: largely unremarkable large provincial capital;
    nice riverside restaurants (famous for "flying vegetable"),
    a few nice old buildings (very old wat in Khmer style and
    Victorian-ish rail station. A nice quickk stopover on teh
    way to Sukothai

    I lived in lampang for a time, what would you like to
    know? Best thing about it is its people.
