Spending a month in Thailand/Vietnam this July. I love the
fact that I have no idea where I will spend the 31 days in
between my flights. I'm not asking for advice on where to
go, because winging it to me the thrill. I am concerned
about advanced reservations. Are they needed for domestic
flights within Thailand and Vietnam? Thanks in advance for
your help.

I have used Thai Air a fair bit. Usually book the flight the day before and that is in february which is one of the peak times. Thai Air has a very extensive and very good domestic schedule. Check out their web site for domestic fares, destinations and departure times. Don't know about Vietnam.

Vietnam airlines domsetic flights need no advance booking
as long as you can be flexible with the departure dates.
But then even if you do book ahead you still have to
flexible because flights can be cancelled/rescheduled
anytime. I flew V.A. from Sydney to Saigon and they were
    fine. Domestically I wouldn't do it. A V.A. official told a
friend of mine when she was trying to book an internal
flight from Hanoi to Danang "please don't fly in my
country". This same friend was on a plane from Saigon to
Nha Trang when the pilot took the plane to 300 feet with 0
visability and still tried to land. Eventually the pilot
gave up and went back to Saigon. Lucky for them.
