Padang to Java

How to go from Padang to Java?
1/ Road: I heard the buses in South Sumatra are terrible.
But it is worth considering if the road has some interesting
sites?
2/ Sea: I read there is one ferry going from Padang to
Jakarta. How is it? Which class should I take? What's the
schedule.
I would appreciate any tips, shared experience regarding
this long journey between Sumatra and Java.

go whatever class has six people per room.
these rooms are rarely full, unlike the ten person or
    economy class rooms.
this is particulary important when the seas are rough.
the fewer people you got the less chance one on them is
gonna puke all over the place.

Take a bus up to Bukittinggi. From there, many agents
    advertise a bus-to-Pekanbaru, fast-boat-to-Singapore option.
From there, you can boat to Batam in Indonesia, and fly to
many points in Java cheaply. Padang-Batam is also a cheap
flight. The Pelni boats are also good.
