Take any major currency, but credit card is widely accepted
If you are heading out of KL you may have to shop for a bank
that takes cash. I know at christmass down the east coast at
towns like Kuantan you would go into banks and they would
only take travellers cheques or cards.
The same bank in different towns had different policies.
Hello from Malaysia. Living here now. RM (local currency)
is pegged now to the US$ @ RM3.8/US$1.0
Banking system is fairly advanced - so no problem
exchanging most foreign money. Doubt you will be able to
buy RM overseas or convert it back after you leave
Malaysia. Even most banks in S.E. Asia won't touch your RM
- so make certain to convert it all before you go home!!
I found some banks in Indonesia that still accepted RM -
but not in Thailand or Philippines etc.
VISA and AMEX are accepted all mid level hotels and better
shops.
Take some USD, and change them at registered money changers
where you get a better deal than banks. They are easy to
find, usually in major shopping centres in Town. Save the
cards for big buys in chain stores, etc......
