Bangkok to China

Can anyone recommend the best way to get from Bangkok to
Kunming, or anywhere in Yunnan? A friend and I have
considered flying, which would be fairly expensive for our
budget and are trying to consider other options. Are there
trains or buses to China via Laos or Vietnam? Are visas
necessary for these countries if we only pass through them
to get to China? Thanks for any recommendations.

   ..to Kunming cheaper than from Bangkok. I think they even
   have flights from Chiang Rai. A figure of US$150
   return springs to mind but not sure.
