I AM TRAVELLING IN THAILAND AND LAOS JULY - AUGUST AND AM HAVING SOME DIFFICULTY IN DECIDING WHAT TYPE OF PACK TO CARRY. PROBLEM IS THIS- GO WITH A LARGE NO FRAME BUT WITH ALL THE STRAPS AND BUCKLES OR GO FOR THE FULL SIZE INTERNAL FRAME PACK. WOULD APPRECIATE SOME INPUT. THANKS

a light sports bag and forget the pack. If you need a pack
you are taking too much. 99% of what you are taking is
available for a cheap price in Thailand. Travel as light as
possible and enjoy your time more.

I generally carry an Eagle Creek bag which can be used as a
piece of legal carry on baggage (if you detach the small
day pack) or can be used a medium sized backpack--the belt
and straps pull out. I think it's called the Expedition.
It's about 1/3 smaller than my Northface Snow Lion backpack
(the just about the biggest conventional pack of its era).
Since all you really need are clothes, sundries, film,
torch, etc. and not a sleeping bag, tent, etc., this eagle
Creek pack (or something similar) should be adequate.
Look over the rei site (www.rei.com) which has lots of
useful information about packs (not just ads for their
suff), which may help you decide. If the Eagle Creek travel
pack isn't there try luggage or travel gear on their site.

Really all you need is a medium/small pack. One you can
carry as hand luggage - you can still fit a lot in.
You really don't need much in SE Asia. Don't whatever you
do weigh yourself down with sleeping bags, waterproofs,
jeans etc. You'll never need them.

Duffle bag is the way to go.

When my wife & I travel to asia we only take 2 tiny day
packs, one change of shirt & a few undies. When you arrive
at hell hole airports at midnight or travel around it is so
much easier & more fun to have virtually no luggage. Some
years we take another nylon bar that folds into the size of
socks and fill it up with goodies as we go or right at the
end. Have fun don't be one of those poor soles you see with
a wardrobe(refer to list at the bottom of thorn tree)on
their back as the slowly trudge around
