We are travelling in a few weeks to Thailand and hiring a
car in the north. I am thinking of whether to travel into
Laos.
I would welcome comments on whether it is worth travelling
into Laos from the North or North East for a few days or
not.
How do you get around?

    Hi Marnee,
I would have second thoughts about hiring a car in Thailand
(even in the North). I have travelled around Thailand and
have witnessed lots of bashed cars & broken motor cycles.
The hilly north can be treacherous for those who have never
driven there (and for experts too). I travelled using
    public transport...much more fun.
    Happy Travels

I don't think you'll be able to get your car across the
    Mekong!!!

The north of Laos is a very demanding place to get around.
To cross over for just a few days would not be worth it.
When I was in Muang Sing at the beginning of the year I met
a group of guys who were on full on off road motorbikes
with 4WD support vehicle etc. It took them 2 1/2 days to
get from Huay Xai to Muang Sing. The Huay Xai to Luang Nam
Tha road is notorious. YOu need a full on 4WD to do it. You
would be able to get your car ferried across to Huay Xai as
there is a ferry that can do this. At all Thai - Laos
border crossing points there are vehicle ferries. They are
mostly used by Thai and international logging companies
that are deforresting Laos at an unbelievable rate.
