should I be concerned taking my 8 year old son to bali next week given the small riot in Kuta a couple of days ago? presume it was a problem between the balinese, not tourists (or it would have got a whole lot more media attention), but nonetheless it's pretty unusual around that area. we'll be staying in tuban. if anyone's got any information please respond. Has the Australian govt issued any kind of warning? Thanks in anticipation

First of all, Indonesians, especially Balinese, love
children. You'll have no trouble. If you take your child
swimming, be sure to observe the safe swimming areas. Every
year, somebody drowns because they swim in unmarked areas.

Go for it. You and your son will be quite safe in Bali.
As mentioned above, Indonesians love kids. You won't have
a worry in the world apart from pickpockets and gigolo's.
    Have a wonderful time.
    Donna.

  3. To Bali with Kids Added by: carol

Bali is a safe, fun place for kids and their mums. I did
it last year. Do not be overly concerned about the
attention the young men give to your son, they just love
kids and your boy will probably enjoy the attention of
these guys. My son became so attached to the guys that he
didn't want to come home with me. I think its a nice
opportunity for boys to get some male love and attention
and to share their toys with some "big kids" (Im talking
about guys 18 - 25 years old) they really enjoyed sharing
his toy cars. One thing I didn't like was the television
shows that they put on for him, I thought they were
inappropriate for children because of the violence but I
know lots of people let their kids watch all sorts of shows
on TV. My son, who is 6 years old, was taken on the back
of their motorbikes to visit their home villages which I
believe is a really wonderful opportunity. I must add that
I would be very, very, very, suspicious if men here in
Australia gave my son as much attention as the Indonesian
men, in fact I would not allow it here for fear of
pedophilia. I do not see that as a problem in Bali. I
think you and your boy will have fun if you make sure you
do things that make you BOTH happy.
