My top tip for people that enjoy snorkelling is buy your own
mask and snorkel before going to SE Asia because the ones on
offer / hire out there are crap.
It'll be the best investment you make!

saving a whole lot of money!

...but the one's on hire out there are poor
quality.....is this anything to go by? I have never seen
any for sale......you certainly won't get anything if you're
    off the beaten track.....

    I bought mine in Bangkok 8 years ago - it's brilliant - I've
used it every year and I've never had any reason for
    complaint!

We also bought our masks on beforehand. One exception
however is Ko Phi Phi where they rent excellent material.
They even have masks with correction glasses (is this the
    right word??).

  6. Bring Everything For Snorkling From Home Added by: The Kepala Desa (Village Chief)

I don't know about buying such equipment in other parts of
South East Asia, but if you are going straight to Indonesia
you should bring your equipment with you. Nick is
definitely correct. The masks you find in Indonesia are
lousy, don't fit, and leak. The fins are usually too small
for a western person's feet. If you are serious about
enjoying your trip you should bring your own. They will
last you many years and many trips. You won't have to worry
about finding available masks, snorkles, and fins or whether
    they will fit.

if you rent from a dive centre then you will get good gear.
rent from the hotel or corner shop then it will probably be
crap. a good tuas mask cost me 1400 pesos ($37) in
philippines and i think 500 for a good snorkel. i used them
    for diving.

DOn't forget to buy a floating raft!! A must for island
hoping, the ones with holes store a canof beer perfectly and
the pillow serves as a snorkle mask....
