where should I go...

My family is planning a three week vacation to the northern
part of India--the area around Delhi, including Varanasi,
Khajuraho, Agra, Bharatpur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer,
a whirlwind marathon if I ever imagined one, I know! I am
arriving two weeks before the rest of my family to meet my
girlfriend, who will have been in India for several months
already. I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions of
where we should go, staying in that section of the country,
to spend a week or so in each place. I don't want to spend
my whole vacation on my mum's crazy itinerary and want to
get to know and experience a couple of places before I have
to rush off to the next one. I really want to experience
India and its people, but also know I will want some peace
and relaxation time with my long-lost girlfriend. We also
definitely want to eat great food and see some beautiful
things, whether it be people, mountains, markets, or forts
yet we don't know where to go because it seems all the main
attractions of the area will be covered while we are with
the family and we certainly don't want to go to the same
place two times! I would appreciate any and all suggestions
about where we should go. My thanks to all...

  1. Head for the hills! Added by: Al

You'll need to check on the weather situation (monsoon), but
you should just head up to the mountains....Dharamsala,
Rishikesh, kullu/Parvatti valleys....all very chilled out
places with beautiful scenery. Do a little research to see
    what suits you.

  2. When? Added by: Yarra

    Jay,
You are not going to appreciate it if someone recommends a
tiger lodge when the parks closed or a mountain retreat when
its coverd in snow. So tell us when you might be there?

  3. Less places more time! Added by: Shannon

There are only three rules of travel (in my not-so-humble
    opinion!!) :-)
    1. Less places more time
    2. Less clothes more money
    3. Less "wrong" more "different"
To more directly answer your question - Udaipur is pretty
    cool too.

  4. I will be there around Added by: Jay

Christmas. Yo are oh so right, suggestions need to take
into account that it will be winter in the mountains, won't
it? All suggestions appreciated!!! Write again Yarra!

Well, if I didn't want to travel my butt off, still hoped
for some colour and had a pretty lady to catch up with I
would take shannon's idea on board and head to Udaipur.
Just an overnight train from Delhi, the lake and the old
parts of town still have that special feel. If you can't
spark up a romance in this town, something is wrong.
It's a bit touristy so if you still have a little time head
east to Chittorgarh, Bundi!!! and maybe the tiger park at
Ranthambore. The Castle Joormor Boari (what ever)is very
    romantic.
    BTW
I was looking at your mums itinery and while its of course
too much in too short a time it borders on being practicle.
    Fly Varanasi-Khajuraho-Agra, hire a car/driver Bharatpur-
Jaipur and then maybe train it to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.
