If I believe the Indian news paper (but I should not) the
situation is beter than it use to be.
I went there in august 94 and august 96. The situation was
hot, they were strugling to cancel the election but it was
still possible to do what ever I wanted.
if I can give you an advaice I would say just do not go
trekking with someone you do not know.
Ecxepted that this country is probabily the more poetic
which I have ever seen, every senary is a sigth of beauty.
So if you can, it is really worth going there.
    So enjoy.

The advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (UK)is
to definitely stay out of the Kashmir valley. A contact of
mine - Rashid - in Srinigar says otherwise, and is trying
hard to convince me to visit. I have chosen not to risk it.
However, if you do go, a good guide is essential. Rashid is
extremely trustwothy. He has guided my mother and myself
(on two separate visits) around India and can organise
trekking in the valley. Please contact him and say I
    recommended him.
    His address is:
    Rashid Chapri,
    PO Box-80,
    Dal Lake,
    Srinigar,
    Kashmir 190001,
    INDIA
Let me know how you get on.

    hello
i have just talked to my very best friend on the
    phone who lives in srinagar.
he says, do not travel on the srinagar-leh road,
it is really a war-zone (read the kashmir monitor
    on internet for info )
he says it is ok for me to come to srinagar....
well perhaps if you like me can stay with a local family
and only move around where they think is ok...
but that is not so great fun, i do not think kashmir-
srinagar is a place for ordinary tourists.
i was there -97 and -98, and yes it is such a lovely and
beautiful place on earth but not at the present.
bye bye from me who has the love of my life over there.....

We were attacked on the srinagar to jammu road, not only
bullet fire but also rockets and other stuff. We had to
crawl out of the bus and take cover behind it. There were
not only tourist but also locals with little children.
To me this just another civilian war which is being fought
    over here.
PLS do not believe the kashmiri's on Janpath in Delhi
promising all kind of nice story because they're nothing
    else but liers.
