This line from an 80's song keeps skipping in my head,
"Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to?" I can't remember any
other lines except the girl's phone number. Anyone else
remember the number...the thing I can't remember is who
sang the damned song.

Can't think of the name of the band, tho.
I'm working on the name - i'm sure that they only had the
one real hit and the name of the group was the singer's name
plus "band"
I know the damned number! It's been torturing me for hours
flopping around in my head (eight-six-seven-five, three-ohh-
ni-i-i-ne! Arg!)! :~) But who sang the damned song? Who
knew that it would come back to pester me years later!
It must have left your head because its stuck in mine
now...........8-).......and I cant think of the band
either..obviously...
I will apologize now (profusely) for dragging you all into
this...may that number slip from your conciousness soon...
:~)
I was writing my apology just as you were telling me that
you got sucked in! (sorry, sorry, sorry...it's driving me
absolutely bug-shit crazy though!) How do ya like this
November-like weather? Shitty!
I walked up to the market earlier;I dug out my winter jacket
...LOL
Tommy Tutone! Jenny's number was 867 5309.
Tommy Tutone, alright! Thanks, uh, "gobbeldygook," or
poster #9 (how do you pronounce your handle? :~) ). Ok, so
now, what are some of the lines...like I said, the number
and just that one line are repeating over and over. Is the
next line something like, "give me something I can hold
onto?"
chmer--I wore my winter coat and hiking boots today!
Yikes! Same temp tommorrow, too! :~(
now it's in my head too!!!! I've just been doing an 80's
lyrics quiz. Out of 222 songs I've only managed to get 98! I
s'pose 867 5309 is better than "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls,
that's been in my head for days!
I've been racking my brains and i think some of it (the
beginning anyway) went like this:
Jenny, Jenny who can i turn to
You give me something i can hold on to
I know you'll think i'm like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall
Jenny I've got your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny don't change your number
867 5309
867 5309
Bit sad isn't it - not so much the song, but the fact that i
can remember.
It took me a few times to read that through and remember!
Did me make me smile though! :~) Ooh-"I Ran," another
golden oldie...anyone remember "Our House?" I remember the
group name...anyone else out there remember? Starts with
an M. (Shit, shit, shit...why does my brain insist on
repeating everything tonight...no more coffee for me...)
That would have been Madness.
is a very, very, very fine house". Is that the one you're
talking about Gecko? It was by Madsomethingorother. I'd
forgotten all these tunes, thanks for the reminders. I
actually saw Flock of Seagulls At Exhibition Stadium in
Toronto with Talking Heads & The Police (summer of '82).
Shaggy, you're correct! Madness I remember, Tommy Tutone I
didn't (hmm, says something about my state-o-mind, maybe.
:~) ). Hey "No," I saw Flcok of Seagulls also--I was in
ninth grade, I think, and all I remember visually was that
HAIR!! Wasn't lucky enough to ever see Talking Heads
though. Okay, can anyone remember that one song with the
line, "How do we sleep while our beds are burning?" I
believe the group was Australian...
That was from "Midnight Oil". The song was called "Beds are
Burning", and yes, they are an Aussie band.
shows yer age, huh? :~) Okay...who sang "I love rock and
roll?" Anybody remember one-hit-wonder songs that they
would like to dangle in cyberspace for a guess? My memory's
not so hot though...
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
MOO! etc. 80s lyrics quiz? 222 songs? Do you have the URL
from that? (he drooled enthousiasticly)
"Stop dreaming of the quiet life, cos it's the one you'll
never know."
Send your answers in, folks.
is a good tune. Erm, Gecko I was 27 when I saw that concert.
Talking Heads were fantastic, The Police were the headliners
but TH blew them away.
"I love rock and roll", I can hear the music in my head but
can't name the band.
During this same era Men At Work & INXS were the other
Down-Under bands making a big hit up here.
I haven't a clue as to what that song is...how 'bout
another line?
Well sheesh, Shaggy, I just said my memory isn't so hot! :~)
Don't you have any?
Is that correct? Too weird, JJ & the Blackhearts were also
playing at that concert I mentioned above. It was one of
those 12 hour extravagnzas with at least 8 bands performing.
JJ was rejected by the crowd, not a good day for her at all.
Who did "The future's so Bright (I gotta wear shades)"?
"I love rock and roll" belongs to JJ and her band--that is
a bit strange, isn't it, no...sounds like a damned good
concert though.
Okay, here's one...I can't quite remember what the words
are on this..."I (struggles to find a word, any word!)catch
(??) the rays down in Africa." I know the band name and
the title, but I can't remember the rest of the words.
Quit running for that runaway bus cos those rosey days are
few
And stop apologising for the things you've never done
Cos time is short and life is cruel but it's up to us to
change
was that ZZ Top?
Timbuk 3.
and Gecko, yours was Africa by Toto.
Who did "Wordy Rappinghood"?
Moo X, I'm afraid I'd lose my ass on that old show, "Name
That Tune." (Fred, I can name that tune in thirty-nine
notes, I can! ;~) ) I give up! Anyone else know?
Here's one for you all.
What was the first song ever shown on MTV?
I don't even remember the name "Timbuk 3!" Kay, so I was
way off with ZZ Top. :~) Wordy Rappinghood...hmm...sing it
for me--I'll be sure to get it then! :~)
And yes, you got Toto right, too!
but that reminded me of another song...who sang that poppy
little ditty, "Mickey?" I actually know this one.
I should be sleeping, instead I'm pawing thru all my old
80's vinyl.
MooX you've got me there, not a clue.
Yah Gecko, it was one hell of a show. It was called the
Police Picnic & may have been one of the first examples of
all day, multi-band shows that are so popular now.
Dire Straits - Money for nothing?
"hey mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine, you blow my
mind, hey mickey"
that one? (thinks hard)
"Get out of my dreams and into my car." Silly-ass song.
was Toni Basil
MTV started off with, of course, "Viseo Killed the Radio
Star", by The Buggles.
I gotta leave now, go and buy something to eat tonight.
Catch ya here again soon.
MooX, it seems there's something happening in your part of
the world this w/end.
Wasn't that an all girl band?
You're going down the right path with the Mickey song. Ah,
crimony...now that's stuck in me noodle...I'm torturing
myself, I swear....
If you're still there, when did MTV hit the air? I don't
remember, but 'Video Killed the Radio Star" was a hit in
1980-81
Enjoy your dinnner, mate, and catch you later. Oh, it's
never boring in these parts, that's for sure.
The quote was "Town called Malice" by the Jam, btw.
but I'm not sure if she had a "band," did she?
Ah--I remember "Video killed..." now, but I certainly
would'nt have ever guessed the band name. What kinda
goofy name is The Buggles, anyhoo? :~)
"get out of my dreams?" Argh--horrible tune! All his
songs sounded a lot alike to me...
May not have had a band, my memory comes from a video I saw.
the crap crap CRAP Billy Ocean. Other claim to fame that
song from that movie w/ Micheal Douglas and Kathleen Turner
and Danny DeVito, whatwasitcalledagain....
'Romancing the Stone'
That was it!
As i'm having so much fun with getting all that old stuff
back, anybody remember "Tainted Love"?
many times, but I'll be damned if I can name the group. No
wait I have the album I think
Tainted Love! Now I know I've got to (clap clap) get away,
I've got to (clap clap) run away to....yeah, that one! But
who sang it?
I'm picturing you jumping up from the computer in a mad
rush to paw through your vinyl...:~) Very good chucks off
that. :~) Are you two up early or late? It's...ooh,
shit...5:30am here...good thing I have tommorrow off. :~)
2:30 am here which puts you in EDT. & I don't have tomorrow
off.
Alright, who sang, "A girl like you"? Late eighties, I
think.
with the music trivia questions. Take yourself off to
snoozeville and have a good (if short) sleep...boy, I hope
you like coffee...:~)
Do you mean that Edwyn Collins song? Bit reminiscent of
Bowie. That's nineties, isn't it?
no, are you really off to bed? Shame, but if so... have a
good night.
greatest gift to Man. But I can still catch 6 hrs., it's
only a 5 min. walk to work.
Edwyn Collins song...here's a few lyrics..."London,
Washington, anywhere you are I want to be there with
you...". Of course, I'm probably messing up the words a
bit.
actually say I was off quite yet.
Album Title: 'Rattus Norwegicus" Still one of my favorite
bands. Do you know it?
Too late to join? Didn't Marc Almond sing tainted love?
... Waterboys? No, that was "A girl called Johnny".....
tough one, this is.... no, i dunno this one.
PS: "Tainted Love" was by Soft Cell.
You were pretty darn close, Marc Almomd was in Soft Cell.
no, glad you're not off yet. Wasn't it the Buzzcocks? No,
no, the Stranglers!
I threw back my head in one of those enlightening, "Oh
yeah!" moments! Step on in John, it's never too late.
So, Moo X, do ya give up on "A girl like you"?
I know this one, I know this one!!!! It's Soft Cell. Now,
please tell me I'm right ! Sorry Gecko, you lost me on the
last one.
MooX, I think I am in awe of your music knowledge. I've
known most of the tunes mentioned so far but can never
remember the actual artist.
I bow my head in shame and grudginly admit, yes, I give up.
Anyone else or are you gonna redeem us and give the answer?
Xena, hey! How aret thou? And new questions, please!
Moo's DJing has an 80s aura about it. But you said it no,
reading through this thread its always the artist you can
never rememeber, and then you get an lyric snippit in your
head and it won't go away. Whoever asked the tainted love
question has a lot to answer for!
You seem pretty well-educated as well. Interesting choice,
the Stranglers for one of your favourite bands, you don't
hear that much anymore. What other bands do you like?
I take on every party i can get my foot in the door at. Do
a lot of drum n bass and trip hop stuff too, honest. Did
you ever bother tolisten to that Squarepusher album i
recommended?
oh, and sorry about that tainted love question, i'll never
do it again. ;-)
Song and artist (pretty sure this is correct):
good times for a change, see the luck I've had....
I went outside for a smoke...the sun is rising and I'm
still all bugger-eyed and wide awake (blink, blink). Btw;
I just saw the biggest raccoon trolling around in my yard--
it scared the bejaysus outta me.
Wow, I'm stunned that no one know that it was...drum
roll...the Smithereens. Anyone remember them?
the song "The Catholics Are Attacking" by the Pop-O-Pies?
Very funny song...:~)
I forgot all about that! (the shame). However, being a cow
of discernable taste I shall endeavour to look for it this
weekend.
"We'll take your car, yes we will......." Song and artist
pweeeeese.
J Giles Band (sp?}! Angel is a centerfold!
I find myself leaning more to the folk/singer-songwriter
area these days, plus World music (whatever that means). But
I still like to spin the odd 80's disk.
Also, Velvet Underground, John Cale, Tom Waits, Iggy Pop
(his older stuff), Billy Bragg. That's a very truncated
list. If it's intelligent I'll give it a listen but truth be
told I don't have much interest in 'Pop' music anymore. ie,
anything that makes the Billboard playlists probably won't
interest me.
Is it J. Geils Band? "Centerfold"?
Smithereens, now THAT is a blast from the past.
Now this one: "punctured bycicle, on a hillside desolate..."
That's a pretty impressive list. As a matter of fact,I saw
John Cale live only some 4 weeks back. It was amazing, and
it was great to see one of my big heroes in the flesh for
once.
As for singer / songwriter, may i recommend Eliott Smith
and Jeff Buckley to you? Big faves of mine.
I LOVE Tom Waits...love his music and his gravel-y voice.
I wish he'd go on tour.
This charming man - Smiths. Surprised you haven't got my
one.
When you said that, FLASH! lightning struck.
Please please please let me get what i want.
Gotta try and get some sleep, as I don't want to sleep the
whole day...have fun guys. :~)
Where was that? I don't think he's come by this way in the
last decade or so.
I know Jeff Buckley (not personally) But Eliot Smith is a
new name. I'll have to check him out.
I'm also very into Celtic Folk, we have some the best
practitioners of this style here in Can.
If you like singer/songwriters check out James Keelaghan.
Did someone mention Jean Jacques Burnel?
But we did mention his first band.
Everybody is asleep outside this thread!!
The power of suggestion is enough for me Dr. no. Allow me to reminisce, please. The Stanglers were the second band I ever saw live (Sex Pistols were my first...).
My first band were the Pixies.
Yeah no, really, saw John Cale. Was in Amsterdam
(Netherlands, that is) and it was really good.
I'll be damned if I can remember the first band I saw live.
A niggling bit of memory says it was Jethro Tull but I'm not
sure.
I saw the Ramones in a small bar in '79(?), that was very
good & Iggy Pop in a community hall in small-town Ontario
which was just wild.
Well, gotta go snooze, it's been fun. Catch ya'll later.
Hope you're not too knackered tomorrow.
That's one of those names that I recognize but cannnot match a song to. Is JJ Cale a seperate person?
My first concert was (cringe) def Leppard (is that laughter
I hear....) - my brother was into them and he dragged me
along. I think I was about 13. Anyway, finally purged my
soul of that little secret crime.
Carole - John Cale used to be in the Velvet Underground but
I don't know about his solo stuff.
Ditto for Velvet Underground.....never knowingly crossed paths with 'em.
even if you don't realise it. Venus In Furs was used for an
ad (think it was Esso) some time ago, and what
about 'waiting for the man'? Lour Reed was in it too and if
your British you'll definitely know Perfect Day and what
about 'walk on the wildside?
VENUS IN FURS WAS USED IN AN ESSO AD?????
What is this world coming to?
Lou Reed's an easy one! Iggy was one too, wasn't he. Or was that NY Dolls? Or both? I think I was being asphyxiated by obnoxious southern rock around that time (what? late 70s?).
someone else may be able to clear that up but unless my
memory is playing tricks I have this image of the Eesso
tiger padding around with 'shiny shiny, shiny boots of
leather...' playing over the top. Alsmost as bad as
Revolution being used by Nike eh?
or you'll turn your milk sour!
Here down-under they used Harry Nillsen's "Everybody's
Talkin'" as a car ad.
I'm in flashback mood at the moment, SBS is doing a 60's
week and at the moment they're showing some old music
videos, then later on tonight it's none other than "Easy
Rider"! Gotta find a blank tape for that one!
on good ol' UK tv we have a Starsky and Hutch weekend
coming up. I can never remember that theme tune. Better
still, ITV are going to start a James Bond season showing
ALL the films in order.
Easy rider is definitely a weird film but it's been ages
since I last saw it. I like the ballad of Easy Rider that
the Byrds did for it though.
Who knows the band that did the "da da da" song that was
used in Volkswagen commercials here in the US?
(Tell ya soon).
Long may it continue! Amy, I'm not in the US but there was a song that had a line that went 'da da da' by a German(?) band called Trio. Could that be them? Eep! I'm showing my age.....
standing on a beach with a gun in my hand looking at the sea
looking at the sand... (or so i recall)
The Cure - Killing An Arab
Alright, next one...
"The handshake seals the contract, from the contract there's
no turning back..."
Depeche Mode (saw 'em in November) "Everything Counts".
Alright, you want it, you get it.
"I've never done good things, I've never done bad things,
I've never done anything out of the blue."
