O.K., I'm curious. How many Canadians posting on this site
actually have a Canadian flag sewn onto their backpack?
Is it just a stereotypical thing, or is it actually the
norm? If you do have one, why? I've heard that many people
do it to avoid being confused with Americans.

yes, the reason that everyone I've met puts them on to
avoid the confusion thing...
Right now every Canadian backpacker in China is frantically
sewing one on.
I dunno. Canada's involved with this bombing too. I don't
think I'd want to be in China right now and have it known I
was from ANY NATO country!
when petitioners ask me if I'm registered to vote, I tell
them I'm Canadian.
I don't have a flag and I'm a Canadian. That confusion with
America excuse doesn't really fly in alot of Asia (China
excepted at the moment) - but most Canadians do have a
prominent flag. I think it is kind of creepy Canadian
pride- we simply think (for no particular reason) that we
are better then everyone else, and everyone loves us just
for being who we are, and the flag is our typical non
decript, boring as all shit, quiet way of making that
statment. Persoanlly I tell anyone who asks I'm from
Alberta, and I've never heard of this Canada.
asking how many AMERICANS have sewn Canadian flags to their
backpacks. . .I've known of quite a few.
a friend of mine just got back from Italy and she said that
an american approached her there, and asked her for extra
canadian flags so he could pretend, because the air is so
tense towards americans right now. the whole situation is
sad beyond words. and if anyone is from any of the
countries who are affected everyday by this (which is
pretty much all of us), my heart goes out.
I've been traveling since the '70's and have never "worn
the flag". As much as I like where I live, I'm a non-
nationalist and prefer to just be another face in the
crowd. If asked about my nationality though, I don't hide
it (I like satisfying others' curiosities as much as having
my own satisfied. I'm sure even those who do like to
display their flag (whatever it is) realize that what
nationality they happen to be (or not be) is a very small
part of who they are.
I wonder if I'd be more likely to sew a Planet Earth on my
pack if I were traveling to other inhabited planets...
Dawit... will it be similar to the U.N. flag or how about
another deisign?

I'm Canadian. When I went to NZ a couple of months ago my
Kiwi friend advised me to put a flag on my bag, because we
were thinking of hitching from Wellington to Auckland and
she said we'd be much more likely to get picked up with my
flag. I didn't get around to it, and we took the train
anyway (another story), and I'm glad I didn't bother because
it would have been embarrassing. Everybody knew I was
Canadian anyway.
I have the Canadian flag on my bag. It is to avoid being
mistaken for Americans. After a few minutes around most
Canadians you would be able to tell they're not American,
but our initial appearance is pretty similar. It's not a
statement against Americans, it's just that we're not
Americans. I'm all for everybody putting their nation's flag
on their packs.
I put one on my pack when I first went to Europe, partly
because it was expected of me. When I told people I was
going, the question of "Did you put a pack on your bag yet?"
was way up there with "Do you have a rail pass?" It's become
convention. But actually, I was surprised to see that no
other nationality has done the same thing. So it's not that
we have overnationalistic feelings or anything....
And one other note - as well as my Canadian patch, I added a
patch with the name of my hometown on. Just an extra
identification, I guess.
I am in the process of international negotiations to acquire
a flag for me bag before I dare leave this country this
summer.
G'day ,

As an American, I've thought about putting the flag on my
pack, mainly due to all the anti-american jabs on TT. But
the truth is, I think it depends more upon the fact if your
an a**hole or not.

While on an Iberian tour 2 years ago, a Canadian couple gave us, and lots of other members of the group, Canadian flag pins. She worked for the gov't, and had brought along a dozen or 2 to give out. So, we ALL wore Canadian flags on our bags! I've since lost mine.
To Iran with it!
They told me I should so I did...
But why? I just ended up being surrounded by other people
from Canada at every airport and trainstation. I did not
leave Canada 12 years ago to hang out with other Canadians
all the time. Fuck it. My attitude is - if they don't like
me 'cause they think I'm a yank, I don't have the time to
deal with their small minds. Having travelled and lived
elsewhere most of my adult life I feel more global then
Canadian anyways...
My advice? Tear it off... be who you are.
You d' mon. Good post.
