Where is the best place to get reliable information on the
Trans-Siberian (Mongolian) Railroad? This trip is my summer
project (if I find the cash...) and the Russia LP is rather
out-dated. Any recent info or advice would be appreciated
(including on Russian visa!!). Also, what is the best way to
make reservations for the Moscow-Ulan Batar and
Ulan-Batar-Beijing legs FROM America? Thanks for any help.

I'll be in Mongolia June 14-28. I've got an apartment to
stay at in Ulaanbaatar, but I'm planning to spend about a
week of that in the Gobi Desert. Any travel partners to
help cut transportation costs would be appreciated.
An excellent source of info and booking for the TSib
is The Russia Experience, near London (with US partner).
I traveled with them in 1996 and they gave great value
and advice. TREx director, Neil McGowan, is a fount of
useful info and is currently updating the longtime best
guidebook, Trans-Siberian Rail Guide. Take a look
at their comprehensive web site www.trans-siberian.co.uk
which includes info on USA booking and visas thru
www.sunvalleytravel.com
As a followup to my previous post, if you have any
specific questions I'd be happy to tell you about my
1996 trip. I highly recommend a stopover in Mongolia
and near Lake Baikal. Also, if you'll be near St. Pete
then go for a family stay near Lake Ladoga. TREx can
arrange all of it.
The best travel agency for Americans/Canadians pursuing a
trip on the TransSib has got to be White Nights. They are
based in St. Petersburg and can get you Visa help and your
tickets without any problems. They also have an office in
California.

but they are best.
