I am currently on the road in Urumqi having just traveled
overland from Dehli, Nepal and Tibet. I was in Tibet about
two weeks ago. I recommend that you enter Tibet via
Nepal. It is much easier. Obtain your China visa in Hong
Kong and fly to Kathmandu. Go to the border and meet other
people, hire a jeep and away you go! Pretty easy. I saw
some backpackers getting stuck in Golmud because CITS
required a minimum of 5 people before they would issue the
permits and it was very expensive! They had been waiting
for 5 days. Others flying from Chengdu had some problems
with agencies but unfortunately I don't remember all of the
    details.
WARNING: Three of the four Kathmandu agencies recommended
in the NEW March 1999 Tibet LP want to invalidate your
China visa and exchange it for a Tourist visa so that you
you must purchase a flight back with them!
    HAPPY TRAVELS

    Sarah,
I was in Lhasa last June and it was much warmer than expected, maybe around 80 degrees F. It is cool very early in the morning, enough for a long-sleeve shirt. Otherwise, we never used the warm clothing we brought. We did have a couple of evening rainshowers but they didn't last long. Enjoy your trip!
