This is the CENTRAL ASIA topic

Why is it that most postings here have nothing to do with
central Asia? People are asking about China, Thiland, Tibet,
Hong Kong, Nepal, even Europe to Alaska. China (Except
Xingxang provence, which is central Asia) is north Asia.
Thiland is south east Asia. Thank you.

    Totally agree.

  2. lack of geographical knowledge Added by: tam

i think it is because a lot of people are not sure exactly
where a country would be classified so they try a few
different places. i am looking for information on tibet and
nepal and from what i've seen on the thorn tree so far,
that could be under central asia, indian subcontinent or
south-east asia, depending on where someone has put it. i
think it would be a lot easier and less time consuming if
there were strict classifications of countries, but hey,
that's life, and i'm happy to try more than place to get
the great info and advice that appears on here.
    cheers

    Irritating isn't it.
I read recently somewhere that an interviewee for a place at
Cambridge University (presumably not to read geography)
couldn't identify Africa on a globe. Is the world really
    becoming a smaller place?

  4. Who says what's where? Added by: JonA

Sure, Europe and Thailand certainly aren't Central Asia,
but what and who defines what is?
Taking Tibet, it's quite distinct from South Asia and,
though the CCP would probably argue otherwise, to call it
East Asian is equally inappropriate. Central Asia is really
a 'catch all' for countries outside of North, South, East
    and West(/Mid East) Asia.
Tibet and Afghanistan were always depicted on maps as being
Central Asian, though the term CA died out until the recent
re-opening of 'former Soviet Central Asia'.
ps - Surely North Asia is Siberian Russia and (poss)
    Mongolia? China's East Asia!

should be able to figure out that Hong Kong and Japan and
    not Central anything.

  6. The Far East? Added by: Mary

In England, we refer to countries like Japan, Vietnam and Thailand as being in the "Far East".
Go West and you're in the U.S.
I guess you Aussies don't quite think the same?
    Any thoughts?
    Mary.

  7. Depends on your travel iternary Added by: lunlun (lunlunlk@hotmail.com)

It depends on your Entire trip....if u are going from the
KKH to china and then off to tibet, u can consider that as
central Asia, if u are going from Kathmandu to thimpu to
Tibet, u can call it indian sub-continent, so IT TOTALLY
depend on your travel iternary, not that i am supporting
    Japan and Alaska
