Mexico City Safety

Does anyone have any UPDATED information on the crime
situation in Mexico City? Has it gotten better, worse, or
stayed the same? Are there any areas of the city where
increased caution is advised? Since I am Latino, would this
make it easier to blend in and thus avoid being a target?
Thanks!

chris, myself and four other australians were in mexico in
march and found it pretty good on the whole. we walked
around at night in the zocalo area and felt safe. however,
had some bad experiences on the metro where we were
pickpocketed and of coarse the police wanted nothing to do
with it. as well i would avoid garibaldi square where the
mariachis play. we were pounced upon by many aggresive touts
and once inside one the restaruants were charged false
prices. one of the waiters then tried by slight of hand to
steal a one hundred peso note. other than that it was a
    great experience. cheers, clayton.

You can get very updated info on Mexico from the "Updates"
section for the guide books from their website.

with clay on the stuff about garibaldi. a waiter tried to
rip us off as well. otherwise the plaza was a lot of fun. i
also felt surprisingly safe altogether. it's always easier
when you "blend in". though many times i felt they treated
me (the blond swede) the same way they did the locals.
