I have 5 months to travel in Central and South America, and
was thinking about Mexico, Ecuador, Peru and possibly Cuba,
but really am clueless at the mo about the whole thing! Any
up to date info would be greatly appreciated, as well as
suggestions of places to go, avoid, people to say hello to
etc etc You know how it goes!
Cheers!

Lucky you! I hope you have a wonderful trip!
I noticed that you left Central America off your list, and I
heartily recommend that you go there! Some places that I
recommend include (anywhere in) Guatemala, specifically
Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Nebaj (if you have
time), and Tikal, Copan Ruinas and the Bay Islands of
Honduras (I don't know the post-Mitch condition of the
islands), Playa Tamarindo and Volcan Arenal in Costa Rica,
any number of places in El Salvador, and the San Blas
Islands of Panama. When you get to Ecuador, go to Cuenca!
It is beautiful. Also, don't forget Macchu Picchu in Peru.
I have heard great things about Cuba, but haven't made it
there yet myself.
The Yucatan peninsula is wonderful. If you like resort
areas and beaches you have the east coast from Cancun in
the north as far south as you want to go. If you want
archeological ruins take a bus inland to Chichen Itza,
Uxmal, Palenque. If you want colonial cities and ambience
go to Merida and or Valladolid and Campeche. If you want
Mayan culture travel by 2nd class bus anywhere. This part
of Mexico is very safe and when you leave the touristy
coastal areas very cheap. You could spend a leisurely 2
weeks and do quite a lot.
Fiona: I just returned from Guatamala and heartily concur
with La Gringa's comments. The area around Nebaj in the
highlands is beautiful. If you are considering South
America, Ecuador and Bolivia are my two favorite places.
The nice thing about Ecuador is that from Quito, you can be
in teh Rainforest or on teh cost in five hours and you are
three hours (or less)from beautiful mountain towns like
Banos, Peguche, Riobamba. Although hiking the Inca Trail to
Machu Picchu is a must, I was somewhat dissapointed by
Peru--it has become expensive and capitalistic if that makes
sense. Bolivia, from Lake Titicaca to La Paz to Sorata is
fantastic and more off the beaten trail. If you want
specific advice, just e-mail.
Hey if you are single and like to get drunk and have wild

should get off these posts and find something better to do,
