Prices in Guatemala

Hello Travelfolks!!!
i am planning a 4-week trip to Guatemala in June and until
now I thought that prices there (for hostels, food,
transportation etc) would be lower than in MEXICO (where I
am currently living). i just heart from a friend that this
isn┤t so, in contrast prices are double/ three time of
Mexican equivalents.
SO...ANYBODY COULD PLEAAASSSE GIVE MY AN ESTIMATION OF WHAT
PRICES ARE LIKE THIS YEAR IN GUATEMALA; COMPARED TO MEXICO;
or:
What does a 1 person-basic-room or dormitory style
accomodation cost, what a meal and a 12 hour transport on a
budget bus etc...I would be very very grateful. If you just
know about Guatemala, it would already help me if you
mention the prices in the local currency (guatemalan). I can
supply you with the Mexican equivalents, if you wish so.
greetings, and thanx for any tip, Jennifer

  1. Help with Guatemala Added by: Dana (dareicks@juno.com)

    Dear Jennifer,
I wouldn't get to scared about prices in Guatemala because
everything is really cheap. The key to Guatemala is
adaptation. Sometimes places offer really cheap room and
board if you take a short language class or something. If
you are interested only in travel I found a number of places
that were around $4 to $8 US. Recommendations for Guatemala
on what to see--Tikal of course, the town of Coban to the
north is beautiful and relatively cheap. Lake Atitlan(sp)
is also very nice and relatively cheap. The market Chichi
on Sunday is the biggest one and most colorful. Good luck
    and have a good time.
    Dana

place to stay is $ 10/night, depending on were it will even
be a great place (coban, mazate, panajachel, etc.. the
country) in the city you can also find this average price,
about food... a wendys combo is about $ 3.5, transportation
for example... guate city to flores, peten (near tikal) one
way by bus is $ 15.... over 8 hours.
let me know were you want to go and i give you exact
figures, and i even can recomend some places!!!! again do
not worry, you will find it not very expensive and a lot of
    fun... good luck

Food is a little higher in Guatemala than Mexico but only
by a little. Lodging is a little higher in Mexico. Bus
travel is less expensive in Guatemala. You can get by for
$10-20/day easy. El Salvador is a little more expensive.
Touristy places will try to rip you off by upping the
prices just like in Mexico. All in all things are very
    reasonable.
