Renting my house

We are going away for 3 weeks at the end of Jan/start of
Feb. and I was thinking about renting our one bedroom place
out to cover the rent. It is situated 35 minutes walk from
the central city in Auckland, or a 7$ taxi fare. It would
only cost $200 a week. Has any one done this with success
or had there house trashed? $200 a week would cover the
rent, phone and power. Plus I think if we rented it to a
couple it would be cheaper than them staying in a
backpackers.

We've done it and never had any trouble but I wouldn't
include the telephone in the $200 - which is very
reasonable for a short-term rental. I would put a block on
long distance while I was out of the house. The tenants
would be able to receive long distance but not phone out. I
hope it works out for you.
