Has anyone ever done the Cambridge certificate course through Holmes College in Melbourne? I am considering doing this but would like to know any impartial advice or experiences. Is it a very portable qualification? Is the course good value (I havent' recveived any iformation yet so do not know the price)? Are there equivalent certificates I can study for through public universities or institutions? The Holmes course is 4 weeks full time but I really want a part-time weekend or after hours course. Any advice is gratefully received.

Hi Larissa,
I did the same course at Holmesglen TAFE and it's about
$2300 (or more?can't remember). You can do it part-time but
that'll take four to six months, from memory. I did it full-
time which is more like over-time but I think it's the kind
of course you could lavish hours and hours on and it's
better to get it over and done with in four weeks. Not that
it isn't enjoyable but it probably would live up to the
handle 'intensive' better than any other course I've ever
done.
I planned to use it to travel but instead I'm teaching in
Melbourne - well, Mulgrave. To use it in Australia you need
a Diploma of Education.
If you look up the site Dave's ESL cafe, one of the better
ESL ad sites on the web, you'll find a lot of the ads ask
for it.
Most people just get a pass, rarely you can get a B but this
is unusual, especially if you have no teaching experience. I
have a pass and I've noticed that some ads ask for CELTA's
with Bs.
If you want to ask me any specific questions just email me.
Good luck,
hope you enjoy teaching.
If you're talking about the Cambridge RSA I did it a couple
of years ago, and all employers here look for it, or the
equivalent, which is done through Trinity College rather
than Cambridge. The Cambridge one is better known, but the
Trinity course is rapidly gaining popularity as they seem
to be a little more flexible with times and start dates etc.
I paid $2500 to do mine at Queensland Uni and did it in a
month. Ended up with a B and I think it was because I
stayed so focussed for that month. Have just had a friend
do his over 14 weeks and it nearly killed him- it just went
on and on. Go intense and get it over with. Hope you love
teaching and good luck with the course!
