I live in Japan and am travelling to Australia for about
5 weeks in june. For that trip I will take a backpack.
However I also have to go to the UK. I will buy a ticket
out of Australia to London, return with JAL therefore going
via Tokyo. I wanted to stopover in Tokyo on my way to
London to pick up another suitcase to take to London.
However I can only stopover one way. Returning from London
I would only use the ticket as far as Tokyo , so could I
check my baggage in to Tokyo or would it end up in
Cairns?!! They might say that it would constitute another
stopover if request this at checkin. Has anyone any idea
about this? thankyou!!

But I think that you would be lucky to get someone that sharp at the checkin in London. What I would do is go to check in at London and say that you have just heard that you have to break your journey in Tokyo, say because of a sick friend. Say that you are aware that your ticket should go through to Aus, but you are happy to lose that part of the ticket, but you need to be sure that your bags will only go as far as Japan. Then check your bag tags....it's that easy. Airport staff aren't always looking too closely at the fare rules when they have a few hundred people to check through.
