We are currently working in Melbourne and have had a place to live for the last two months. We have had a great time but our job is finished and we are going to start backpacking now and can't decide which way to go, up the East coast, West coast or up to Alice springs, does anyone have any suggestions? We need to be back here again at the end of September. Cheers everyone.

If you're going to hit Alice, make sure you go out to Uluru.
I climbed it, but wouldn't recommend it - I didn't
understand all the social and cultural ramifications at the
time. Awe-inspiring enough just to walk around it. Good
luck

Going up east coast, for 2 months you can decently get all
the way up to the very top ie Cape Tribulation and back..
you'll see Sydney, amazing coastlnies, rainforests, great
barrier reef, islands etc. Good time to go too as in upper
queensland it's not too humid right now.
Going west to adelaide and up to Alice will cost you a lot
of money and hassles(unless you go by bus but that
eliminates what you can see on teh way) and theres not as
much to see. Poster #1 is wrong in my opinion as
Uluru/Ayers Rock is one of the most overrrated things in
australia.. its a bit like the London Bridge, much hyped
but once you get there it's nothing but a tourist trap and
the thing itself is not that great. Nearby Kings Canyon
and Olgas are a hell of a lot better.
But if you really wanna see desert stuff and the real
outback, get a ticket and head straight up to Darwin. Up
there do Kakadu National Park(best time is right now as the
weather there now wont kill you.. but still fuckin' hot and
humid, an experience in itself). Litchfield National Park,
Katherine are all within a few hours drive and they are all
amazing. Tours are easy to organise up there and Darwin
being close to Asia and also the weatehr is an unique
Australian city unlike the urban Sydney/Melbourne/etc.
People up there are very friendly. Nrothern Territory at
the Top End is magnificant.
Spending all your money all the way to Perth is a waste of
time if you havent done the above 2 options. Another is
down to Tasmania but now is not the best time in terms of
weather.. the mountains will be very cold and rainy/snowy.
I'm in Melbourne and have travelled extensively in OZ.. if
you need any more help, email me.
