  1. Some are and then again some are not! Added by: Beth

Many young business men in citys, you meet or work with,
seem to me to be very switched on (dare I say it - New Age
    Guys)
I've also had the displeasure of meeting some really
sexist, racist, MC pigs, of all ages and in all parts of
Australia (stay away from small country towns hotel bars!)
Australia does have this reputation but thankfully the old
    bushmen ways are vanishing.
    Then again I've met these type of men all over the world;
England, Asia, USA, etc - BEST ADVICE - ignore them, don't
try to engage in discussuion (1) you will never win (2)it's
bound to frustrate and upset you.

without all the bullshit of "it depends" and so forth - yes.

but a lot of guys I used to work with in a mine in the
Northern Territory were very au fait with womens issues,
what women want out of life etc etc. Well, I did try hard
    to educate them.
    ~
But seriously, having traversed the globe a few times I
find that men are not all that exceptional - they're the
same all over the world. No matter where you go you'll
    find the same types everywhere.

didn't know that cavemen (#4/#5) could use a computer. Or
maybe they just wish they could wear their dresses in
    public.

  7. Travelling Added by: Linda
[Timestamp: Sat 8 May, 23:04 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Most people travel to see great sights and experience
different cultures. If you are travelling does it really
matter what the men are like. Maybe you need to rethink
your priorities or travel when you are a little older!

  8. Oi !! Added by: Tony
[Timestamp: Sun 9 May, 3:30 Tasmanian Standard Time]

C'mon ladies, lets be fair here...
Just because a guy may work in the bush it means he's
automaticaly some feral bush pig - I work in the bush heaps
and as a geologist I am neither under-educated, nor narrow
minded, nor do I treat women like some form toy there for my
    amusement or benefit.
But granted, there are some horrors out there !!

  9. Most macho Added by: Sheila
[Timestamp: Sun 9 May, 7:18 Tasmanian Standard Time]

You'll find the most macho cultures in the American West,
Australia, Brazil, some of Latin America and some of Asia.
I don't mind it. I like men to be men as long as they
respect me. Why do you care anyway? Are you on a typical
backpacker chick sleep your way around the world tour?

  10. I agree Added by: Mel
[Timestamp: Sun 9 May, 9:51 Tasmanian Standard Time]

with #7 - you can find chauvenistic males anywhere in the
world - why not stay at home a bit longer, grow up and then
you may realise that you can overcome such things.

Geez folks some of you need a holiday! Poor kid is just tryin to get a grip and is clearly a little unsure of what to expect. Since when do you have to grow up before you travel?? I have met many on the road a lot older than 18 that had a lot ofgrowing upto do.
Lets put our poison arrows down and help enlighten her as she ventures out. Not every one is perfect just yet.

  13. You think the men are bad Added by: One who knows
[Timestamp: Mon 10 May, 12:41 Tasmanian Standard Time]

In short yes, but the women tend to be
even more offensive - both visually and
audibly. But then what can you expect
from a group of people descended from
    convicts and common criminal. The
    original Euro-trash!

  14. Bloody Hell Added by: caroline (caroline.redmond@kpmg.ie)
[Timestamp: Tue 11 May, 21:20 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Good God there is some shocking advice here.
I travelled to Aus on my own when I was 18, I experienced some lovely Aussie guys. For example, a great guy who I dated for a while, went out of his way to be nice to me and travelled for about an hour every time he wanted to see me, a really sweet guy.
Also I have two wonderful, new age, very intelligent Aussie male friends who I met while I was over there. These guys are two of the best kinda people you are every gonna come across, and we are still in touch 3 yrs later.
You get MC all over the world, you don't have to leave home to experience them!!
So don't listen to those GROW UP BEFORE YOU GO emails, when you travel you gain experience and you become more independant, therefore maturing as you travel. Just be careful and take percautions, a tip I'd give all travellers all over the world!
    Like anywhere in the world
So have a blast, party hard, travel as much as you can, enjoy every min., mingle with fellow backpackers - its a great experience and be safe.
    Enjoy! - I did and I don't regret a min. of it.
For any more info, drop me a line!

  15. what a question Added by: aussieman
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 11:45 Tasmanian Standard Time]

This is such a stupid question -- figures a woman would ask
    it.

  16. Linda Added by: YI
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 16:55 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Linda (#7) - for most people, experiencing different
cultures involves social interaction. Perhaps that's why
the original poster was asking about the general attitudes
of a significant portion of the population. Also, perhaps
she is travelling on her own and is considering how safe she
might feel if she went to certain part of the country or the
    world. Perfectly legitimate.
Of course there are wonderful Aussie men, as well as not so
wonderful ones. But don't take our words for it -- best way
to find out is to see for yourself.
    Happy travelling.

  19. Where African-American men are welcome Added by: Charles
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 7:51 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Can you tell me the locaction where African-American men are
welcome in Australia? The post replies from Hospitable
Aussie females suggest Brisbane but, are there more? To the
person who suggested Brisbane where are those clubs and pub
where the African-American men hang out? I like to know and
when those men arrive in that city? I look forward to the
    replies.
