Couple from Spain need urgent information about Solomon
Islands. We plan to go there in mid-july till early
september.
We need tips, do's and dont's, the best islands to visit
and... most important and urgent: we need a good aussie
travel agence (e-mail if it's possible) to arrange the
flight from Brisbane to Solomon and the "Discover Solomon
Islands" air pass.
Thanks in advance.

  1. Pacific Paradise Added by: Robin

I know it's a cliche but let me tell you Nicolas, if you're looking for an unspolit Pacific paradise this might have to be the place. I lived there with my family, until 1990, so I'm afraid I couldn't give you any recent information but from what I've heard the tourism infrasturcture remains scant. This can be both good and bad - the absence of budget backpackers accommodation can make it expensive but I don't think the main hotels are costly anyway. If I were you I wouldn't spend long in Honiara itself. The town is a dump and its beaches are pretyy shite. However, go a short distance out of town East or West and you wil find some good beaches. There are some beautiful waterfalls and rivers - esp Tenaru falls and the Lungga river where it passes through Mount Austen. If you don't have a scuba licence I would recommend you get one but they can be easily obtained in Honiara. If not snorkelling is still good. The Sollies are renowned as one the greatest diving locations in the world - a short way out of Honiara there is easy acess to superb diving on World War II wrcks, including Japanese Battleships and submarines and American planes shot down off the coast. Guadalcanal was the site of a huge battle between Japan and America and if you go wandering in the jungle it is not too hard to find helmets, old rifles, grenades and ammunition. Just be careful and don't touch anything and always ask if its safe to go walking. If you want to see a good fil on the war there watch The Thin Red Line.
The real highlights to see will be in the Western Province. You should base yourself in Gizo - there are hundreds of uninhabited little islands out there. Make sure you go to see Marovo lagoon - crystal clear water, white sand, very few tourists and lots of tropical Islands. There are hundreds of remote places you could explore - one idea might be Santa Isabel. A word of warning - be careful if you go wandering that the land you are walking through is not owned by anyone and if it is be sure to find the local landowner and ask his permission to walk through the area. The locals can get very pissed off if people don't respect their land rights. I hope you have a good time. I only wish I was going with you. Robin.
