Cookin' in the Cooks

Going to Cook Islands to welcome the new millennium.
Confused about where to stay. Went to www.cookpages.com but
most places listed, with exception of hostels, were
surprisingly expensive. I couldn't tell if the hostels were
crap or ok. I will have a travel companion but it is not
necessary that we be together. Will be there for about 22
days, so money will go FAST. Does anyone have some tips re:
places to stay. Please let me know. Happy new year! - Lucy.

    www.varas.co.ck . I'll let you know when i return...i'll
    add a posting.

For a place to stay, try the Are Mango hostel down near the
    lagoon. Standard accomodations, friendly owners,
snorkeling equipment available, and much better location
than the other hostel--there's not much beach on most of the
island but there is down by the Are Mango (I can't remember
    the name of the lagoon.)
For food, know that food in the Cooks is -very- expensive.
Unles you want to spend a whole lot of money, you're going
to be making a lot of rice-based dishes with whatever
veggies they happen to have in season. Anything flown in
(and its a very small island--most is flown in) is going to
be very expensive. One thing I wished I'd had was a little
spice sampler made up of spices in ziploc bags. I recall
eating a heck of a lot of rice and canned beans. Yummy
papayas and bananas for breakfast, though, and the Are Mango
will give you those for free (or you can buy them from the
tourist market area just north of town.)
Standard tropical climate warning is don't leave anything on
the counter that you want to eat later or else the ants will
get it. Geckos will also make forays into the garbage canns
to fight over whatever you've thrown away.
Make sure you do the cross-island trek! Take twice the water
you think you'll need and lots of mosquito repellant for the
    waterfall at the end.

During a three month tour of South Pacific Islands I
visited and fell in love with the Cook Islands, my stay was
so wonderful that I extended it an additional week. Upon
arrival I stayed at a hostel on the mountainside above the
airport, (you have to have accomodations booked before
arriving), it was OK but I wasn't very comfortable sleeping
on a mattress on the floor. After 2 nights I moved on to
another hostel I believe it is called Arenaga, located
accross the street from a church (there's lots of them). My
accomodations were in a 4 bedroom house with 2 baths and a
large kitchen, and by hostel standards pretty clean. One of
the greatest things about it was the porch or sitting area,
every morning we'd walk across the street to get fresh
bread, make coffee read the paper and make plans for the
day. In the evenings we'd take turns cooking or planning a
meal out, it also has a BBQ and vollyball court that the
family allowed us to use. As for location it is on the west
side of the island, and centally located for shopping. I
rented a scooter for appx $50 US a week, there is a bus
schedule that's pretty regular but doesn't run late in the
p.m. Make sure to see a dance contest at Bannana Court, do
the cross island trek, snorkle, sky dive, scuba dive and
just get to know the people, they're the friendliest I've
    ever met.

  16. Guesthouse Added by: Shaun
[Timestamp: Thu 29 April, 17:11 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Stay at the Aremango Guest House. Run by a girl named
Maria, the feeling of the whole place is great. It's right
by the beach (a house separates it). Rent a scooter for
your stay - they're pretty cheap and will go fast for the
time your down there. Make sure that you travel to some
islands around, and check out the cheap diving. Aremango
    Guest House, once again.

  17. New Year's 99 Help Me!!! Added by: Stuart (perrys@zenithmedia.com.au)
[Timestamp: Sun 16 May, 15:49 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I am trying to work out
    where to spend the 'coming
    of the millenium' and
    wouldn't have a clue where
    to go!
    Anyone got some ideas?
    What I'm after is:
    a) must be a party
    atmosphere with lots of
    young people (20+ yrs of
    age)
    b) must be hot climate
    c) must not be on the
    otherside of the continent
    in relation to Australia
    d) not too expensive e.g.
    backpacker budget
    I value any suggestions.
    Thanx.
