Hi there!
Can anybody supply me with details of RELIABLE freight companies/ agents who would ship (most likely to be sea freight) my BMW R100GS motorcycle from the UK to South Africa. - Names, phone numbers, email addresses etc.
Many thanks and happy trails,
Chris (brightchris@hotmail.com)

I don't have the specific info you seek, but you can contact your local port authority and request a reliable, full service, ocean freight consolidator (a.k.a. freight forwarder) to the nearest major port of your destination country.
To be economical, you'll want somebody who consolidates other shipments onto one master bill of lading. You'll also want them to crate the bike and take care of documentation and customs clearance on the other end.
Ocean consolidations take a long time especially to small ports, but air freight is going to be very expensive due to the fact that a used gas motor (and the gas tank and lines) are considered hazardous material by IATA. They need to be packed accordingly and cannot be consolidated with other shipments.
I believe that LEP/Profit is a London based forwarder. They may be able to provide everything you need. If not, they may point you in the right direction. Nippon Express U.K. may be another lead. If there's Japanese business out where you're going, they may offer ocean consolidations there.
    Hope this helps,
    Tony

  2. Why not fly Added by: Chris (kalaharigeorge@yahoo.com)

I was considering taking an R100GSPD from Aus to Joburg
about a year ago, Freight worked out at A$800 and I had to
supply a crate and deliver it fully packed to the forwarding
agency. Then there was all the hassle at the other end,
which involved an additional cost for customs clearance,
    etc.
Eventually I settled on flying the bike. Twice the price
initially, but it provided certainty in terms of arrival
    time and costs.
I'm about to do the same with an XTZ660 to Brisbane to Joeys
next November, so keep in touch.
    Cheers.
