I am leaving to go to Africa shortly and I was looking for
advice on safaris. I am travelling through Kenya, Tansania,
Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe. I have researched this
but am looking for ideas on this subject. I am a looking
for the cheaper end of this market, does anyone have info
or ideas. This would be a great help. I hear Swaziland has
some quit reasonable safaris, is this true?Any help will be
apprieciated.

whenwe were in Zim in '93, we went to vic falls and took an ordinary 'booze cruise' at sunset. Sounds ghastly, but we did see loads of game, including LOTS of elephant swimmin an splashin and generally havin a good time
I think in safaris you need to decide for yourself what you want to get out of it - personally I'd avoid the big places, but the parks in northern Kwazulu like the Umfolozi are good for small game and rhino - no big cats really but so what
Also when we were in Zim we went to Kariba and stayed on one of the islands called spurwing - touristy, but divine - stay in your cabin at night cos of the hippo and biffalo and night sky to dream of and we went on an evening sortie and saw elephant and other stuff and lion - lovely! good fishing too!
    have fun.

The best safari I've made three years ago was definately
the Ngoro Ngoro-Crater. Before you go, you shoud shop
around in Arusha (Tanzania)to find out the cheapest
(camping-)safari. Beware of ripp-offs. Some companies offer
package-safari which includes the serengeti. It can be
expensive (around$ 300). Only Ngoro Ngoro costs around $120.

    Hi Alex:
I was also in the tour searching route before i decided on
a company. I'm going with Exodus from London. I had checked
into many of the different groups and heard of the
differences between tour companies. Kariba is one of the
cheaper ones out there...but you get what you pay for....I
had also looked into cheaper companies and more expensive
ones like Guerba and Dragoman....I settled on Exodus
because of lower costs but also it worked out for me for
the dates....good luck with your research! Write me if you
    want any more info...
    Cheers,
    leely

you might check our thread on the Thorn Tree - we are doing
an exploratory trip which will return via Lamu, Zanzibar
and Mozambique in a light aeroplane. this is an expedition
which will be run at cost as a new route for our flying
safaris generally offered to mid market clients. check our
web site on www.flyafrica.com we run backpackers to explore
new areas at a fraction of these costs offering them a trip
of a lifetime that they could otherwise ill afford. in
return we get to run the trip with live ammo so to speak!
otherwise good luck with your trip and pardon the
    intrusion.
    best
    mike
