I am planning a trip from Joburg to Cape Town. Does anyone
have any recommendations on where to stay in Joburg and the
best method to get to Cape Town.
Is there any where that shouldn't be missed?

Try Explorers Club or Airport Backpackers. The Translux,
Greyhound and Intercape provide transport from Joburg to
Cape Town
Check out the Backpackers Ritz in Joburg.
It's in a nice , safe area with luxuries such as a relaxing
garden and pool. There is a range of accomodation and plenty
of it so you are unlikely to get turned away. They will
pick you up from the airport or train station for free and
can help you organise all your onward travel plans. They
also know all the discount which you can make use of.
I stayed at the Ritz last year on-and-off as I travelled
around southern Africa and became good friends with the
owners. Beware of some of the other hostels as they are
not all a glamourous as they make out.
They have a website, though I can't remember the address
and you can Email them to book your accomodation in advance.
Have a great time in SA, I did.
Definitely stay at the Explorers' club...Peter and Bushy run
the place and they are ultra cool...I stayed there off and
on in my SA travels and loved it!! You could also take the
train from Joburg to CT...it is about 27 hours but it is
absolutely gorgeous! If you have some time try the BAZ
BUS...they go all the way to CT from Joburg with no time
limit and as many stops as you want...it's about R800 but
totally worth it. If you stay at Explorers be sure to say
hello from Jen in Canada...they are awesome guys and they go
out of their way to help with suitable travel plans and
making you feel at home!!! Have fun...
PS When we were in CT we stayed at the Oak Lodge(kind of
party atmosphere) and the Ashanti(beautiful view of Table
Mountain) they were both centrally located.
Fly into JHB and fly out of CT to reduce traveltime. Then
stay in a hostel in JHB (yes i stayed in Explorers too, and
i liked it a lot). Make sure to do a cheapish camping trip
to Kruger and then buy a ticket for the baz bus.
(www.icon.co.za/~bazbus). Spend about three weeks in between
and arrive in CT with about a week left. If you have less
time try saving time in JHB and skip part of the middle by
taking a train. A train from JHB to PE might save a week.
Don't miss out on Kruger, Lesotho, Oudtshoorn or Table Mtn.
In addition to the obvious (Kruger), you should see Durban
if you're interested in having fun. I enjoyed Durban's
beaches, night-life, and one other thing: the Indian
culture. If Indian culture interests you, (and I know this
seems unusual, as this is an Africa branch here) you'll be
interested to know that the largest population of Indians
outside of India is in SA - and 85% of these are in
Durban. Hindu culture fascinates me, and I was pleasantly
surprised to visit Durban and find an enclave of India
there!
Also near Durban is Zululand - esp. Dumazulu, a Zulu
village that is open for visitors. At the village, you can
take a tour, sample Zulu food, and see some amazing
dancing.
Finally, the magnificent Drakensburg Mtns. are nearby as
well. They are absolutely breathtaking - a hikers dream.
They are a must-see if you are in the area. Check out the
LP guide. I'm sure it goes into sufficient detail.
From there, you can catch a cheap flight to Cape Town to
avoid the long (but beautiful) drive.
