I am planning on spending next year working/traveling
through Africa by myself(basically being a bum before I sign
my life away to grad school). This is kind of a recent plan
of mine, and I'm not sure that I've thought it through
enough. Does anyone who has done this have any advice...
I've been to Africa before (studying in Kenya for 4 months)
so I know basically what I'm getting myself into - but I've
got a million questions.
Is it possible to get short term/longer term jobs easily?
Are their some countries where it's easier to get a job than
others?
What about health insurance? Did you have it? What
companies?
Thanks in advance!!!

work where you are now. you'll save money a lot faster and
then you can just be a bum for a year without worrying about
making local salaries and slaving away.
I pondered this one all the way to work this morning...I've
never even HEARD of anyone doing this. Most African
countries are VERY protective of what work they have. I
enquired about work in Zim a few years ago, contemplating a
permanent move...no go. In other words...I doubt if
arriving somewhere, hoping to find work would be very
practical. You won't see a MacDonalds with a "help wanted"
sign anywhere. The only possible option would be to find
work with a company that has a branch in Africa
somewhere...but then you'd have to have some skill that
they REALLY required there for a short period. On second
thoughts...stick to looking for needles in a haystacks!
Just dropping a line to let you know that even thouggh the last two messages were very discouraging I have had the same idea about working in South Africa. I have never been to Africa and have no idea about working visas, availability of work and all that stuff. I do however think that there has to be a way to make it happen and if you do happen to unlock this well hidden secret about work and availability I would appreciate an e-mail. If I happen to find anything I will drop you a line. Goodluck!
